| In 1944, the 761st Tank Battalion, aka the Black Panthers, was assigned to Patton's Third Army, placed with the 26th Infantry. They were the first African American (USCT - United Stated Colored Troops) tank unit to fight in WWII. Black soldiers were lead by white officers, but black officers were prohibited from leading white troops.
