We are happy to introduce you to the 2012 edition of A Practical Approach to Cardiac Anesthesia, the latest of five editions published over almost 25 years. During this time, the subspecialty of cardiac anesthesiology has grown and matured. Cardiac anesthesiologists’ skills in echocardiography, pain management, life support, and critical care have expanded their role in the management of cardiothoracic patients.
This edition remains true to its original purpose to provide “an easily accessible, practical reference designed to help the practitioner prepare for and manage cardiac anesthetics.” At the same time, it has been updated and expanded to keep pace with the rapidly changing practice of cardiothoracic anesthesia. Several new chapters have been added. “Cardiovascular Physiology: A Primer” provides an important introduction to the
basics of cardiovascular physiology and monitoring. Unique aspects of the management of adult patients with congenital heart disease are now recognized with separate chapters regarding adult and pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. A chapter has been added discussing “Blood Transfusion”, recognizing the expanding importance of blood management to cardiac procedures, and a chapter has been dedicated
to the unique “Anesthetic Considerations for Patients with Pericardial Disease”. In addition to new chapters, the discussions of echocardiography and other applications of ultrasound have been expanded and enhanced by a large number of high-quality color images. The recent technologic advances in non-invasive monitoring techniques and the most recent recommendations for perioperative glucose and implantable electronic
device management are included.
The fifth edition draws on the experience of 55 authors from 29 different institutions. It is organized into five sections–Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology, Anesthetic Management for Cardiac Surgery, Anesthetic Management of Specific Cardiac Disorders, Circulatory Support, and Thoracic Anesthesia and Pain Management. The book is published in full color, in an up-to-date and easily readable format. The key points in each chapter are summarized at the beginning of the chapter, with references (and hyperlinks in electronic versions) to the appropriate section of the text
