(2022) The Baudelaires - TiLT
Review:
Australia has been producing world-class musical talent for decades now, and the past decade has seen a surge in genre pushing psych-rock bands from Down Under. This includes, but is not limited to, everything from the ever-changing King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, the psychedelic blues rock of The Murlocs, the world conquering Tame Impala, the psych-pop of The Babe Rainbow and the neo-psych of Pond. Emerging from the rich music scene of Melbourne rises The Baudelaires. After releasing their debut LP Musk Hill, the Melbourne-based quintet found themselves touring Europe, sharing the stage with the likes of The Zombies and Dungen before returning to Australia where they began recording new songs and then going on a hiatus to pursue other projects and passions. The past year found them reunited and back in the studio to finish recording their sophomore album Tilt, being released through Cheersquad in Australia/New Zealand, Kozmik Artifactz in Europe and Little Cloud Records in the US. Tilt opens with “Gordon”, a track absolutely drenched in psychedelia. Rapid staccato lead guitar notes waver back and forth and rich, reverb-soaked vocals ooze over the pounding rhythm section of brothers Blair and Ryan Wittstadt on drums and bass, respectively. “Roller Vasoline”, the first single from Tilt, showcases the group’s deft understanding of the genre as clean guitar licks play seamlessly over slightly distorted guitar licks while lead singer Grisha Zahren sings in perfect counter point to the guitar licks provided by Ben Reid. “Parasol” is a straight-on rocker that harnesses the band’s influences like Brian Jonestown Massacre and Thee Oh Sees. “Nancy Nueze” is a standout track on Tilt with its darker, minimalist approach that would make Austin-based psych-rockers The Black Angels jealous. Tilt closes with “On Solid Rock,” a psyched-out cover of British blues-rock band Out of Darkness. Tilt is an exciting album that takes the listener on a groove-filled journey. Fans of pysch-rock would be doing themselves a favor by giving it a listen. After releasing Musk Hill, The Baudelaires were invited to play both the Sydney and Melbourne Psych Fests. With Tilt, they continue to show that they should be invited to play Psych Fests around the world. —
