Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is synonymous with nanotechnology. It is the ultimate tool to see and measure structures on the nanoscale and to probe their elemental composition and electronic structure with sub-nanometre spatial resolu tion. The advent of spherical and chromatic aberration correctors has made TEM an incredibly powerful tool, combining spatial resolutions of 0.5 Å and energy resolutions of 10 meV, an energy resolution comparable to that of synchrotrons.
This recent technological breakthrough will revolutionise not only our under standing of materials, but it promises to become a significant tool in understanding biological systems and bio-molecular systems. Viruses and DNA molecules, to name just two of nature’s most significant nanoscale technologies, can now be studied with unprecedented spatial and energy resolutions, at the same time.
This book is aimed at the scientist looking to learn to use TEM as a tool to answer
questions about physical and chemical phenomena on the nanoscale. It will help in understanding the type of information available and the requirements placed on the sample it advises on how to plan the sample preparation and the experiments to obtain the best quality information and with what uncertainty. It also covers the majority of practical aspects in acquiring and processing images and spectra (x-ray and energy-loss).
