Nanomedicine has been one of the key research areas for diagnosis and curing of cancer for about 30 years. Cancer nanomedicine using functional hybrid nano materials has been expected to provide new opportunities in early diagnosis, imaging and treatment of cancerous tumors. In preclinical settings, nanomedicine demon strates very promising applications for cancer imaging and therapeutics. Currently used imaging techniques in combination with nanomedicine show some important properties to address key challenges in modern cancer therapy: (i) monitoring an active tumor targeting mechanism of therapeutic drugs driven by a physical force (ii) providing guidance for on-demand drug release mechanism and (iii) a capability for next generation image-guided cancer therapy and therapy monitoring.
The oncological branch that performs the diagnosis and treatment of cancer using non-invasive imaging techniques ‘interventional oncology’ employs x-ray, ultra sound, computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for image-guided cancer therapies.
