The appearance of carbon dots has been one of the most exquisite gifts in the nanotechnology domain. Carbon dots have gained much popularity due to their extraordinary properties and their utility in various domains such as materials science, energy conversion, biomedicine, chemistry, physics, food science, explosives detection and security, quantum physics, drug delivery, photocatalysis, aeronautics, robotics, etc. Carbon dots are among the youngest members of the family of nanostructures they generally a exhibit spherical morphology with an average diameter of less than 10 nm. Carbon dots were accidentally discovered in 2004, and have been widely explored since then they are derivatives of organic compounds and exhibit stability in aqueous media, making them suitable for biomedical studies.
Apart from this, many other properties such as a high quantum yield, photostability, biocompatibility, low toxicity towards the environment and living cells, and high conductivity make them more advantageous than other quantum dots, such as graphene quantum dots (GQDs), other zero-dimensional structures such as diamond nanocrystals, and one dimensional cylindrical carbon nanotubes. Carbon dots have found their widest application in the biomedical domain, particularly in sensing, imaging, and therapeutics, due to their excellent photoluminescence and chemiluminescence.
