* David Deutsch - On the Science of Parallel Universes (2 books)

DAVID DEUTSCH (b. 1953)
is a British theoretical physicist at the University of Oxford.  In 1985, he pioneered the field of quantum computation by formulating a description for a quantum Turing machine, as well as specifying an algorithm designed to run on a quantum computer.  He has also proposed the use of entangled states and Bell's theorem for quantum key distribution and is a proponent of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics.  Since 2012, he has been working on constructor theory, an attempt at generalizing the quantum theory of computation to cover not just computation but all physical processes.

Deutsch has written two books aimed at the general reader on Everettian (many-worlds) quantum theory, evolution, computation and knowledge creation:

THE FABRIC OF REALITY: The Science of Parallel Universes—and Its Implications (1997) is an exploration of the new physics, including time travel, quantum computers, and the multiverse.  This multiplicity of universes, according to Deutsch, turns out to be the key to achieving a new worldview, one which synthesizes the theories of evolution, computation, and knowledge with quantum physics.  Considered jointly, these four strands of explanation reveal a unified fabric of reality that is both objective and comprehensible.  The book was shortlisted for the Rhone-Poulenc science book award in 1998.

In his second book, THE BEGINNING OF INFINITY: Explanations That Transform the World (2011), Deutsch argues that explanations have a fundamental place in the universe — and that improving them is the basic regulating principle of all successful human endeavor.  He tracks how we form new explanations and drop bad ones, explaining the conditions under which progress — which he argues is potentially boundless — can and cannot happen.

Deutsch was the recipient of the Dirac Prize of the Institute of Physics in 1998, and the Edge of Computation Science Prize in 2005.  On September 22, 2022, he was named as one of four international pioneering physicists to receive the 2023 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, the most lucrative academic prize in the world, for leading foundational work in quantum information.

In addition to 60 unitemized papers and other contributions (all PDF), the following books are presented in both ePUB and PDF format:

* The Beginning of Infinity: Explanations that Transform the World (Allen Lane / Viking, 2011)
* The Fabric of Reality: The Science of Parallel Universes—and Its Implications (Penguin, 1998)
