Against medical advice and without the knowledge of her husband Pat Solatano Sr., caring Dolores Solatano discharges her adult son, Pat Solatano Jr., from a Maryland mental health institution after his minimum eight month court ordered stint. The condition of the release includes Pat Jr. moving back in with his parents in their Philadelphia home. Although Pat Jr.'s institutionalization was due to him beating up the lover of his wife Nikki, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Nikki has since left him and has received a restraining order against him. Although he is on medication (which he doesn't take because of the way it makes him feel) and has mandatory therapy sessions, Pat Jr. feels like he can manage on the outside solely by healthy living and looking for the "silver linings" in his life. His goals are to get his old job back as a substitute teacher, but more importantly reunite with Nikki. He finds there are certain instances where he doesn't cope well, however no less so than some others who have never been institutionalized, such as his Philadelphia Eagles obsessed father who has resorted to being a bookie to earn a living, his best friend Ronnie who quietly seethes over

Il Lato Positivo - Silver Linings Playboo, è un film del 2012 diretto da David O. Russell. Patrick Solatano (Bradley Cooper) è un ex insegnante liceale, ricoverato in una clinica psichiatrica a causa del disturbo bipolare da cui è affetto, emerso dopo aver sorpreso la moglie Nikki (Brea Bee) insieme al suo amante nella loro casa. Grazie all'intervento della madre Dolores (Jacki Weaver), Patrick viene dimesso anzitempo e torna a casa dei suoi genitori, dal momento che ha perso tutto ciò che aveva.
Pat è ancora innamorato di Nikki e decide così di impegnarsi per trasformarsi nell'uomo che lei aveva sempre desiderato ma, nonostante la sua determinazione per riconquistarla, Pat non può avvicinarsi all'ex moglie dal momento che contro di lui c'è un ordine restrittivo.
Le buone intenzioni di Pat per ricostruire la propria vita non danno i risultati sperati, almeno fino a quando non incontra Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), la sua bella e misteriosa vicina di casa, donna squilibrata e anche lei problematica a causa della morte del marito. Tiffany proporrà a Pat il suo aiuto per riuscire a raggiungere i suoi obiettivi, solo se in cambio lui accetterà di ballare con lei per partecipare ad una gara di ballo a fine anno.
Nonostante i dubbi iniziali, Pat accetta la sfida e comincerà ad allenarsi insieme a Tiffany, ma nel frattempo deve provare a sistemare il rapporto non facilissimo con il fratello Jake (Shea Whigham) - che lo ha sempre messo in ombra - e con il padre Pat Senior (Robert De Niro). Pat è un uomo di buon cuore ma fortemente scaramantico, accanito tifoso dei Philadelphia Eagles, che non ha mai saputo costruire una relazione vera e sincera con il figlio.
Piano piano le disastrate esistenze di Pat e Tiffany si intrecceranno sempre di più, fino a che non si ritroveranno inevitabilmente coinvolti in un intenso rapporto, che andrà oltre la semplice amicizia.
