Domestic animals are an integral part of human existence. The human population approaches 7.5 billion in 2010 and is predicted to reach 10 billion by 2050. Food of animal origin provides about one-sixth of human food energy and one-third of human food protein, and demand is accelerating with the growth in population and affluence, especially in developing countries. Animal products make a crucial contribu-tion to the continuing struggle to alleviate alarmingly prevalent malnutrition in the world. Social and environmental stability depend on efforts to balance natural resources with human needs and animals play a key role in this delicate relationship.
