Textbook in PDF format

This book deals with the kinematics, statics, and kinetics of machines (e.g. reciprocating engines, textile machinery, and linkages generally) which undergo appreciable variations in their effective moments of inertia during normal operation. The textbook literature in this field is characterized by a heavy reliance on graphical methods.
This tendency is undoubtedly due to the nonlinear nature of the equations which govern the motion of such systems. It was the unhappy lot of early machine designers to grapple with nonlinear problems at a time when few mathematical tools existed for their solution. Consequently little effort was made to calculate the transient motions (departure from steady flywheel conditions), and the stresses in the moving parts could not be calculated with adequate precision. Such an approach leads to a cycle of designing, fabricating, testing, modifying, etc. which often consumes years of development effort at considerable expense.
Fortunately, the solution of nonlinear equations (algebraic or differential) has become a routine matter now that digital computers are widely available. Thus we have, in principal, a way to extricate ourselves from the inadequate and, at best, time-consuming drawing-board approach to kinematics and dynamics. General-purpose computer programs for the dynamic analysis of variable inertia machinery have emerged in recent years, and a brief survey of such programs is given in the final chapter. However, it is decidedly not my intention to merely present a set of recipes (or canned programs) which solve a variety of problems in the subject. The fundamental approach taken in this book is to reframe the pertinent problems of kinematics and dynamics in a form better suited for numerical analysis rather than the traditional xiiigraphical analysis. The methods expounded may be demonstrated with ordinary electronic calculators, but they are most effectively utilized with the aid of digital computers (or programmable calculators). Ample information is provided for users to generate their own programs at varying levels of sophistication, to utilize the several programs which are fully developed in the text, or to obtain the larger, more sophisticated general-purpose programs
