Govert Schilling - Ripples in Spacetime and other works (8 books)

GOVERT SCHILLING (b. 1956) is a prize-winning popular science writer and amateur astronomer based in the Netherlands.  His articles appear in Dutch newspapers and magazines as well as in New Scientist, Science, BBC Sky at Night and Sky & Telescope.

Schilling is the author of several acclaimed books about astronomy and cosmology.  RIPPLES IN SPACETIME: EINSTEIN, GRAVITATIONAL WAVES, AND THE FUTURE OF ASTRONOMY (2017) begins with Einstein's prediction of these tiny ripples in the fabric of spacetime over a hundred years ago, but they were only recently perceived directly for the first time.  The book is an engaging account of the international effort to complete Einstein’s project, capture his elusive ripples, and launch an era of gravitational-wave astronomy that promises to explain, more vividly than ever before, our universe’s structure and origin.

CONSTELLATIONS (2019) is an unprecedented visual tour of all 88 constellations in our night sky.  Much more than just a stargazer's guide, it is complete history of astronomy as told by Schilling through the lens of each constellation.  Profiles of each constellation include basic information such as size, visibility, and number of stars, as well as information on the discovery and naming of the constellation and associated lore.

Schilling's most recent work, THE ELEPHANT IN THE UNIVERSE: OUR HUNDRED-YEAR SEARCH FOR DARK MATTER (2022), takes readers on a comprehensive tour to explore the mystery of dark matter and the researchers working to crack it.  With so many new particle experiments coming online, telescopes dedicated to finding a solution and bright researchers exploring the limits of theoretical physics, there is real hope, he says, that this combined effort will soon shed light on dark matter and open up a deeper understanding of the nature of reality itself.
