Wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson returns home on a very personal project - to turn his old childhood garden into a haven for native wildlife. After 30 years of filming the world's most iconic creatures, Colin heads back to Ireland and a garden he spent his childhood summers mowing and spraying. But now he wants to transform this old orchard into a celebration of the native plants and animals now struggling to survive on these islands and inspire viewers to do the same. / / But as Colin's own patch transforms, he meets with some unexpected obstacles. With trees planted and seed sown, the long-awaited rain just does not arrive. There is no doubt, our climate is changing.

Colin welcomes the first of his wild visitors. When rain finally arrives the garden is transformed - ponds burst with dragonflies and damselflies, meadows explode in flower, and the much-awaited hum of life can be heard everywhere. Colin encounters his first nest of the year, a real milestone for the project and he explores the life cycle of the much overlooked solitary bees.

It is autumn, and Colin cuts his wildflower meadow. With the flowering season coming to an end, it is time to remove his first year growth to make room for the native plants that lie waiting in the soil beneath. Working through the winter, Colin reflects on his journey so far and plans the busy spring and summer months ahead. / / With most of the heavy lifting done, Colin uses a gentle hand to maintain the garden as he tries to lure back as many wild creatures as possible. He is treated to a great surprise as a creature he hasn't spotted here for over 40 years makes a remarkable return - the elusive red squirrel.

As well as regular red squirrels, Colin spots signs of an even more elusive mammal. The native plants in his meadow begins to take hold, attracting a new host of visitors as clouds of insects move in. / / Colin meets John Ross MacMathúna, a young farmer who is welcoming nature onto his land. He planted his land with native oak trees and it is now a home for long-eared owls, red squirrels and pine martens, all sharing it with the family suckler herd. / / As Colin's second year draws to a close, he reflects on the urgent need for everyone to make space for nature. With our natural world being pushed closer and closer to the brink, every single patch counts, big or small. And in a world of overwhelming news and a sense of helplessness, a project like this can offer hope.
