This live recording of 2010 Götterdämmerung is the final installment in Oehms Classics' Ring cycle from the Hamburg State Opera, begun in 2008 with Rheingold and Die Walküre and continued in 2009 with Siegfried. The success of the series is a testimony to the skill and vision of Australian conductor Simone Young, the first woman to record the Ring. She has a sure grasp of Wagner's large designs and her reading has a powerfully surging energy. The orchestral playing is superb, and the choral singing is thrilling. Vocally, this is not a performance on par with what listeners would expect from an absolutely first rate cast, such as is usually assembled at Bayreuth. Overall, the lower voices are the most effective. The singer who makes the strongest impression is Wolfgang Koch, whose sharply characterized Alberich seethes with malice and fury. John Tomlinson is a secure and powerful Hagen and Robert Bork's Gunther is nearly as strong. As Waltraute, Petra Lang is authoritative and solidly resonant, and her monologue is one of the vocal highlights of the performance. The weakest link is the Siegfried of Christian Franz. His voice is light, somewhat nasal, and wobbly even when he is not pushing for volume, and his dramatic presence doesn't come close to filling the very large shoes the role requires. Deborah Polaski is a credible Brünnhilde, but her voice lacks the ideal gleam, and she too has difficulty keeping her pitch focused and pure. Her most introspective (and quietest) moments, though, like her second act scene with Hagen, are lovely. Anna Gabler sings well as Gutrune, but she always sounds very distant. Even though the voices aren't consistently of international quality, the dramatic excitement and musical momentum Young generates throughout the opera are tremendous. The sound is more than adequate, but is not especially present, and there is a fair amount of audience noise. The balance strongly favors the orchestra; it's hard to imagine that the engineers couldn't have given singers a boost to bring them more into the foreground. This would not be the ideal first recording of the opera for listeners new to it, but its strengths, particularly the outstanding orchestral playing, make it one that should be of interest to committed Wagnerians.
