Urban Legend tells the story of a group of pretty college students at a remote New England university. The focus of the story is Natalie, a beautiful, academically-gifted student at the fictional Pendleton University. Natalie and her friends are all involved in the Folklore class being taught by Professor Wexler. Wexler regales his class with urban legends, which include Pendleton's own urban legend about a Psych professor who murdered six students at Stanley Hall 25 years ago. Natalie is the first one to suspect there's a killer on campus, especially after she has ties to all of the victims. No one, including her friends, Wexler, Dean Adams and security guard, of course, believes her until it's too late. Now she finds that she and her friends are part of the killer's ultimate urban legend.

Al New England Pendleton College, considerata una delle più tranquille università degli Stati Uniti, la studentessa Michelle viene trovata morta colpita da un'ascia ben affilata. Poco dopo, anche il giovane Damon viene trovato impiccato ad un albero dove aveva appuntamento con la bella Natalie. Intanto il professor Wexler tiene lezioni sull'analisi di alcuni racconti folkloristici contemporanei indicati col nome di leggende metropolitane. Nessuno vuole credere che di questi ed altri delitti possa essere colpevole Paul, che scrive sul giornale universitario ed è in cerca di qualche scoop. Di Paul è innamorata Brenda, che dice di essere solidale con Natalie e vuole aiutarla nelle indagini. Dopo molte ricerche, Natalie scopre che c'è un legame tra gli omicidi di oggi e un fatto accaduto trent'anni prima all'interno dell'università, quando ci fu un massacro di studenti ad opera di un professore dispotico. Natalie é convinta che, a conclusione di quel piano terribile, il maniaco voglia uccidere proprio lei. Quando anche il prof. Wexler viene trovato morto, Natalie si trova di fronte alla imprevista verità: l'autore dei delitti è Brenda, che adesso vuole vendicarsi su Natalie, perché tempo prima aveva provocato la morte di David, il suo ragazzo, e ora le aveva rubato Paul. Nella colluttazione, Natalie e Paul riescono ad avere la meglio su Brenda, che muore cadendo nel fiume. Anni dopo, al Pendleton college, uno studente racconta quei fatti ma nessuno gli crede. Una studentessa che somiglia a Brenda dice: "Vi racconto io come è andata".
