“South of Heaven” aims to humanize the participants in this story, and while it doesn’t mount a nail-biting thriller, it delivers violent events, which are quite vivid, reinforcing the ugliness of bodily harm. This film is a slow-burn endeavor, trying to capture emotional exchanges and the fog of revenge. “South of Heaven” doesn’t reach a fever pitch, but the ending works superbly, playing with the fading dreams of these cursed lives in a way that makes up for some wandering stretches of conversation and threats, giving the effort a haunting reality after it highlights the diminishing returns of violence.
