. What a fine band. They are supposed to be a folk/rock band but I think they lean more towards the rock. I first saw them at Farnborough Technical College (c.1970) where they topped the bill. If memory serves me correctly the support band was Genesis. There was a third act in the interval which may have been Rab Noakes or High Speed Grass (with my late drinking mate RobinMcKidd). . One's memory is a little hazy about that period due to the vast amount of drugs that were consumed! BUT I do know that we all had a great night out. Isn't it odd that people with strong accents lose them when they are singing - one wouldn't have known they were Geordies. . The following year they returned to the Tech but this time they were supporting Genesis! I was backstage for this one as I was engaged to Peter Gabriel's cousin's wife (enuf said about that). . I next saw Lindisfarne in the 80's when my pal Robin got our names on the door for their gig at Croydon's Fairfiels Hall Robin's ex-wife was now married to a member of Lindisfarne). Four of us drove down in a Mini. The band were still as entertaining as ever. In the interval we were in the very large "Green Room" with a well stocked bar. This is where it went a bit weird. Mate Robin was from Glasgow, the band from Newcastle. They were all chatting away and my wife and I couldn't understand a word. It was like being in a different country! . At the end of the night the band invited us to return to North London on the tour bus. The wife and I jumped at the chance. Robin & GF followed us in the Mini to the Holiday Inn @ Swiss Cottage where everyone started speaking English while we nattered and consumed many alcoholic beverages. We lucky folk arrived home as dawn was breaking. What a night and what a generous band. . In the early 90's I was lucky to see them again at the Fairfield Halls where they played a lot of old favourites. Death and retirement have changed the band in recent years . I hope you enjoy this album - then go and check out the rest of their discography. Folk. Rock.Folk/rock. Who cares what label people put on them - they are just great entertainers and fine musicians. . |
