Greetings Galaxy! Just finished this and wanted to add a few comments. First: this is not an action movie. More of a family drama, based loosely on historical events in NYC in the late 1960s and 70s and features an all-star cast of well-known actors. The cinematography, sets and props are all period-accurate and realistic, while the film itself touches on a wide range of issues of the time, including the race riots of the late 60s, the Vietnam War and the rise of the Five Families. (a.k.a. the New York Mafia) As a devoted music fan of that era, kudos as well for the period-accurate soundtrack, which includes early Rolling Stones, The Jackson 5, Van Morrison and so on. Having said that, fair warning: there are only a few 'action' scenes in this film - including one in particular featuring a bit of home dentistry gone wrong. Otherwise, the main focus of the film is on the lives of the family members surrounding a young Tony Soprano (long before he became a mafia boss) and the influence they had on him as he was growing up. And that means long dialogues, which gives this film a slow overall tempo. There are no car chases, no special FX and very few 'wow' moments that you would find in other mafia-type movies. In plain English, this ain't Scarface. It's a prequel to The Sopranos - all backstory, in other words. Cut to the chase: If you watch this with realistic expectations (and that means don't expect two hours of non-stop action) you may enjoy it. A/V is excellent. End credits begin at 1 hour and 54 minutes. Rating it 7.5/10. Personally, I would have preferred a little more action and a little less talk, but I can appreciate the effort they all put into this movie to make it feel like the real deal. Final tip: pay attention to the pinky swearing scene. It will help you to better understand the ending. Thanks to GalaxyRG. 🥂 |
Basically this is a period mob piece, set in backdrop of Newark NJ race riots of late 60s. Plot concerns mob numbers racket, and how a young Tony Soprano gets pushed into criminal life. Actor Ray Liotta (best known as lead in Goodfellas) actually grew up in pre-riot Newark NJ, and has a standout turn as mob boss and his imprisoned brother. n its own merits this is a mediocre movie; the historical angle is interesting, and its got a few (expected) scenes of violence and sex, but there really isn't that much more to recommend for it. Iits largely aimed at Sopranos fans, who will have more depth on backstory of the characters. I'd say non-Sopranos fans are really better off just watching that TV series. Its 15 years old, but not dated at all, and even to this day its still probably one of the best things ever put down on television, period. |
I was looking forward to this and after watching it I was very disappointed. Just didn't think it was very good. |
nice share many thanks audio / video 8 I thought the cast & Story was good Written by the same same people who made the sopranos it does help if you've previously watched the sopranos great film definitely worth a |
Thanks to TGx for another awesome weekend of superior content as well as all you folks for the amazing feedback & reviews on this movie! :) Special thanks to @Miok for the staff rec. and @Kent what an A+ review my good buddy as always! :) Having never watched the show before you make it seem like this may be a good place to start, and if it's good as in the 7.5/10 range then bring on the action if that's what the previous seasons of the show have been like, and sounds great! Looking forward to downloading and watching it, thanks to your very detailed review, which sounds completely awesome! :)) I can't think of many movies on here that I haven't given an A/V=10 and couldn't even figure out what a 9 would be like, because the quality is so "pristine" on all the TGx movies, that I've had the privilege to be able to watch! Hope everyone has a great weekend and enjoys this as well as other fantastic content from TGx, and everyone on the team who make it possible for us as well! |
Meh movie. slow burn with very little reason to get invested in the movie. |
