Off the Wall: 1983 Epic CD
Keeps the original dynamics intact, and still sounds punchy and clean at the same time.
Thriller: 1999 SACD
Sounds just like the master tape, according to those who have access to the Jackson vaults. Outstanding sound.
Bad: 1987 Japanese CD 32.8P-200
Since this is an early digital recording, the CD will sound just as good as the vinyl, and won’t have any surface noise / vinyl defects.
Dangerous - 2010 Music On Vinyl Reissue
While Dangerous was also a digital recording, it was made with an early high-resolution digital multitrack unit, so there are clear advantages to a high resolution rip. The 2010 pressing appears to use a high resolution digital file, which makes it the clear winner.
History: Past, Present, and Future, Book I - 1995 1st Press. CD (Uncensored)
The original CD is slightly dynamically compressed, the original vinyl is pressed from a CD quality digital file, and the high res remaster is dynamically compressed to hell. The original uncensored CD is the best option here: there’s no censorship on “They Don’t Really Care About Us”, and the sound quality is acceptable.
Invincible – 2009 Music On Vinyl Reissue
The CD / Qobuz versions are compressed to hell; the LP rip sounds fantastic.
