Il Coraggio della Verità, il film diretto da George Tillman Jr., segue la storia della giovane Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg).
Starr si muove tra due mondi: abita in un quartiere di colore dove imperversano le gang ma frequenta una scuola prestigiosa, soprattutto per volere della madre, determinata a costruire un futuro migliore per i suoi figli. Vive quasi una doppia vita, a metà tra gli amici di infanzia e i nuovi compagni. Questo fragile equilibrio va in frantumi quando Starr assiste all'uccisione di Khalil, il suo migliore amico, per mano della polizia. Ed era disarmato.
Il caso conquista le prime pagine dei giornali. Quando appare chiaro che la polizia non ha alcun interesse a chiarire l'episodio, la protesta scende in strada e il quartiere di Starr si trasforma in teatro di guerriglia. C'è una cosa che tutti vogliono sapere: cos'è successo davvero quella notte? Ma l'unica che possa dare una risposta è Starr.
