Industrial begins with Throbbing Gristle. In addition to coining the term in the ’70s, the U.K. subversives established the scene’s devotion to clanging noise, dystopian gloom, and controversial themes. It’s no overstatement to say that the group sound as if they’re bringing Western civilization to a grinding halt—a quality that carried over to its earliest adherents, including SPK and Einstürzende Neubauten, whose use of scrap-metal percussion would itself be drawn into the music’s DNA. As the ’80s unfolded, the scene began to fragment. While Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, and Front 242 adopted synthesizers and pounding dance grooves, Killing Joke, Godflesh, and Ministry headed in another direction, incorporating elements of heavy metal. Industrial eventually found mainstream acceptance in the form of Nine Inch Nails’ rock-centric vision, yet the movement has never stopped producing fringe artists like Boy Harsher and HIDE who remain committed to industrial’s roots in experimentation and transgression.
