Young Belfastian Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day-Lewis) admits that he was in London at the time of the incident. He also admits that he is not a model citizen, having committed a petty robbery while in London. He does however profess his innocence when it comes to the bombing of the Guildford Pub in London in 1974, the event which killed several people inside. A self-professed non-political person, he and his three co-accused, dubbed the Guildford Four, are thought to be provisional members of the I.R.A. Their self-professed innocence is despite each having signed a statement of guilt which they claim were signed under duress. Their case includes having provable alibis for the time frame of the bombing. And eventually, Joe McAndrew (Don Baker), a known I.R.A. member, admits to the bombing. Dubbed the Maguire Seven, seven others, primarily members of Gerry's extended family including his father Giuseppe (Pete Postlethwaite), are accused of being accessories to the bombing. Nel Nome del Padre, il film diretto da Jim Sheridan e basato sul racconto autobiografico di Gerry Conlon, vede Daniel Day-Lewis nei panni del protagonista, un adolescente ribelle nella Belfast degli anni 70, nel pieno della guerra civile e degli scontri tra l'IRA, l'esercito repubblicano irlandese, e l'esercito inglese.
Il padre di Gerry, Giuseppe Conlon (Pete Postlewaite), per aiutarlo a cambiare vita,decide di spedirlo a Londra dalla zia Annie. Gerry in viaggio incontra un suo vecchio compagno di scuola, Paul Hill (John Lynch). Insieme, invitati da un amico, Paddy Armstrong, si sistemano in una comune di hippy della metropoli inglese.
Poco dopo il loro arrivo, un attacco terroristico attribuito all'IRA, fa saltare in aria un pub di Guildford, nella periferia di Londra, causando cinque e diversi feriti. Tra i primi sospettati fermati dalla polizia c'è Paul Hill, che sottoposto ad un interrogatorio serratissimo, coinvolge l'amico Gerry, Paddy e Carole Richardson, una delle loro compagne della comune. Non potendo resistere alle pressioni psicologiche e fisiche della polizia, che arriva a minacciare Gerry di uccidergli il padre se non avesse confessato, dopo sette giorni di maltrattamenti firmano una dichiarazione di colpevolezza. Vengono così arrestati anche Giuseppe, la zia Annie, e la sua famiglia, per favoreggiamento, accusati di far parte di una rete di supporto ai terroristi. Nonostante le prove improbabili a tratti inesistenti "I quattro di Guildford" sono condannati all' ergastolo, il resto della famiglia a pesantissime pene.
Una combattiva avvocatessa, Gareth Peirce (Emma Thompson), assume la lora difesa. Ostacolata dall'ispettore Dixon, sostenuta dall'opinione pubblica, aiutata da Gerry e Giuseppe, trova l'occasione per far riaprire il caso alla ricerca della verità
