In China, the girl Mei is a genius that looks like a computer in numbers. She is abducted by the Chinese Triads and the boss Han Jiao ends Mei to Chinatown, in New York, to help him in the control of his activities. Meanwhile, the fighter Luke Wright has his life destroyed when he wins a fight against the will of the Russian Mafia and accidentally kills his opponent. The Russian mobsters kill his wife and the alcoholic Luke wanders on the streets and hostels with no objective in life. One day, Han Jiao asks Mei to memorize a long number and soon the Russian Mafia abducts the girl from the Chinese mobs. She escapes from the mobsters and is chased by the Russians; by the corrupt detectives from the NYPD; and by the Triads. When Luke sees the girl fleeing from the Russian mobs in the subway, he protects the girl and discovers that the number she had memorized is the combination of a safe where the Triads keep 30 million dollars. Luke is an elite agent and uses his skills to protect the girl.
Safe, film diretto da Boaz Yakin, è la storia di Luke Wright (Jason Statham), un ex agente speciale della NYPD. L’uomo non se la passa benissimo economicamente e, per non far mancare nulla alla sua famiglia, decide di prendere parte a match di arti marziali miste di seconda categoria. Una sera gli viene chiesto di partecipare a un incontro truccato, ma lui si rifiuta e sceglie di battersi con un importante capo della mafia russa che, per vendicarsi, ammazza sua moglie. Luke è ormai costretto a vivere solo e da latitante, sempre con la paura che qualcuno prima o poi lo farà fuori. Comincia allora una vita da senzatetto, cercando di confondersi tra i clochard di New York, finché non fa un incontro che cambierà completamente la sua esistenza. Un giorno l’uomo salva la vita di Mei, una bambina orientale molto intelligente che era stata rapita dalla mafia cinese.
I malavitosi volevano sequestrarla con lo scopo di sfruttare le sue capacità matematiche per occuparsi di operazioni illegali senza insospettire le autorità . E soprattutto per non utilizzare più i computer che avrebbero sicuramente lasciato tracce utilizzabili dalle famiglie nemiche. Si interessa alla ragazzina anche la mafia russa, ma Luke decide di prendersene cura e proteggerla a tutti i costi, anche perché le ha ridato un motivo per vivere. A un certo punto, però, Mei finisce nelle mani sbagliate e, pur di riaverla sana e salva, l’ex agente decide di consegnare al suo rivale Alex Rosen (Anson Mount), centinaia di migliaia di dollari. Riuscirà Luke a salvare la bambina e ricominciare finalmente una nuova vita con lei?
