(2021) Lily Konigsberg - The Best of Lily Konigsberg Right Now
Review:
It’s an interesting move to begin your career with a best of. But this isn’t really the start of Lily Konigsberg’s career. She has been writing, recording and producing music as part of the off-beat and experimental DIY punk trio Palberta since 2013. More recently, she has been drip feeding her lo-fi and intimate solo material and collaboration pieces through her personal Bandcamp page. Which leads us neatly on to her first widely accessible release as an artist in her own right, The Best of Lily Konigsberg Right Now, a carefully considered collection of music from the EPs 4 Picture Tear, It’s Just Like All the Clouds and Good Time Now (a split release with Andrea Schiavelli), as well as other material released over the years. Konigsberg also has a knack for writing pick-and-mix sized pop songs that linger on your lips for days. “Summer in the City” has all the fresh indie folk appeal of early Feist and the balmy brass of Beirut. The gleaming power pop nugget, “7 Smile” is led by an acoustic guitar, strumming Strokes-esque riffs, and warm fuzzy guitars marbled throughout and “It’s Just Like All The Clouds” is an air-whipped auto-tune future-disco lullaby. Her auto-tune experimentation blossoms with dark beauty on the synth-pop gem “Owe Me”, a gritty neo-noir lament, that is all dark nights and neon lights, evoking the stench of exhaust fumes and petrichor, through textured production and sampling. What we get is a glimpse into the world of a prolific, experimental and confident artist who has been criminally overlooked. The charming, indie pop recordings soar way above the simplicity of their bedroom production, thanks in kind to Konigsberg’s deft touch, inventive writing style and diligent approach.
