(2021) Al Stewart - Year of the Cat [45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition]

Review:
This 45th Anniversary edition has been newly re-mastered for the very first time from the original first-generation master tapes by Alan Parsons and includes a complete, previously unreleased concert recorded at the Paramount Theater, Seattle in October 1976 on the ‘Year of the Cat’ tour over two CDs and a new mix of the track ‘Belsize Blues’, recorded at Abbey Road Studios in September 1975. Al Stewart had found his voice on Past, Present & Future and found his sound on Modern Times. He then perfected it all on 1976’s Year of the Cat, arguably his masterpiece. There is no overarching theme here, as there was on its two immediate predecessors, but the impossible lushness of Alan Parsons’ production and Stewart’s evocative Continental narratives give the record a welcome feeling of cohesion that keeps the record enchanting as it moves from “Lord Grenville” to “Midas Shadow” to “Broadway Hotel,” before it ends with the haunting title track. Along the way, Stewart doesn’t dwell too deeply in any area, preferring to trace out mysteries with his evocative lyrical imagery and a spinning array of self-consciously sophisticated music, songs that evoke American and European folk and pop with a deliberate grace. This could be unbearably precious if it didn’t work so well. Stewart is detached from his music, but only in the sense that he gives this album a stylish elegance, and Parsons is his perfect foil, giving the music a rich, panoramic sweep that mimics Stewart’s globe-trotting songs. The result is a tremendous example of how good self-conscious progressive pop can be, given the right producer and songwriter — and if you’re a fan of either prog or pop and haven’t given Al Stewart much thought, prepare to be enchanted.

avatarLove this album. And of course I have an anecdote that nobody wants to read but I'll share it anyway. :_facepalm The year was 1985 in the small city of Lancaster, PA - home of the Amish. Many years after his big hits and fame had faded, I walk into The Village Nightclub and notice the marquee above the door announcing tickets for an evening with Al Stewart for only $20. What could I do? I bought a ticket, went back to my car and did a line of blow (which was normal for me back in the mid-80s) and then went inside and was treated to one of the best, most intimate live concerts of my life. Sat on the dance floor for this show, quite literally a few feet from Al and his buds. It was one of those life changing moments, to be so close to such a talented group of musicians. I was higher than a kite and although it was many years ago, it feels like yesterday. On the one hand, I felt kind of bad that he had slipped from stardom by that point and was playing such a small-town gig. On the other hand, I was ecstatic that I was lucky enough to be there on that night, just by chance. A superb musician and a legendary album. Thrilled to have it, especially the remastered anniversary edition in FLAC.

Thank you, DarkAngie, for taking me back to my roots. :_:D

PS: 'Year of the Cat' was the big hit single from this album, but for anyone unfamiliar with Al Stewart, check out 'On the Border', and turn it up loud enough to wake the dead. It is the 'sleeper' hit single on this album, imho, and has always been my favorite track. The piano accompaniment and acoustic south-of-the-border guitar riffs will lift you up and melt your brain - in a good way. Now resting comfortably in my new favorites playlist.
