The harmonically advanced trumpeter Thad Jones is a perfect contrast to the tenor of Dexter Gordon on this enjoyable Prestige LP. Gordon was somewhat forgotten in the United States at the time (his "comeback" was still four years away), but is in excellent form on the four numbers, particularly during a passionate version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."
Dexter Gordon and Thad Jones built a perfect combo in front line of this quintet. It was a pity that they only made one full album together in early 1970's. Ca'Purance is one of the best albums of Dexter Gordon and a real gem. It has the same quality with the classic Blue Note albums from early 1960's, which have been regarded the best albums which Dexter Gordon ever made. Hank Jones plays nice along with Stanley Clark and Louis Hayes in the rhytm section.
