Ben Campbell is a young, highly intelligent, student at M.I.T. in Boston who strives to succeed. Wanting a scholarship to transfer to Harvard School of Medicine with the desire to become a doctor, Ben learns that he cannot afford the $300,000 for the four to five years of schooling as he comes from a poor, working-class background. But one evening, Ben is introduced by his unorthodox math professor Micky Rosa into a small but secretive club of five. Students Jill, Choi, Kianna, and Fisher, who are being trained by Professor Rosa of the skill of card counting at blackjack. Intrigued by the desire to make money, Ben joins his new friends on secret weekend trips to Las Vegas where, using their skills of code talk and hand signals, they have Ben make hundreds of thousands of dollars in winning blackjack at casino after casino. Ben only wants to make enough money for the tuition to Harvard and then back out. 21, film drammatico diretto da Robert Luketic, segue le vicende di Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess), uno studente modello che vorrebbe entrare alla Harvard Medical School ma non ha i soldi per potersi permettere l'iscrizione, nonostante sia stato accettato col massimo del punteggio. Per poter pagare i trecentomila dollari necessari, fa domanda per aggiudicarsi la borsa di studio Robinson, destinata a una sola persona all’anno. Vincerà chi avrà raccontato l'esperienza di vita più accattivante. È allora che Ben comincia a ricordare e a narrare la sua storia. Durante gli anni di studio MIT di Boston, era stato notato dal professor Mickey Rosa (Kevin Spacey), affascinato dalle sue capacità nel fare calcoli matematici anche complessi. L’accademico decide allora di sottoporgli il problema di Monty Hall, uno de più difficili di tutti i tempi.
Quando lo studente lo risolve, si guadagna la sua fiducia e soprattutto l'invito a diventare un membro della squadra di Blackjack, composta da un piccolo gruppo di studenti molto in gamba: Fisher (Jacob Pitts), Jill (Kate Bosworth), Choi (Aaron Yoo) e Kianna (Liza Lapira). Attraverso un elaborato sistema di conteggio delle carte, riescono a guadagnare cifre da capogiro ai famosi tavoli verdi del casinò. Il ragazzo è restio e in un primo momento rifiuta. Poi Jill lo persuade ad accettare, scelta quasi obbligata considerate le scarse probabilità di vincere la borsa di studio. Comincia così la sua avventura a Las Vegas, che gli riserverà gioie e dolori. Riuscirà alla fine a entrare ad Harvard?
