Native Americans in Los Angeles. For 12 hours one Friday night, from late afternoon until dawn, we follow a handful of urban Indians. Yvonne is pregnant, commenting on her life and dreams as she shops, walks home, cooks dinner, and watches her husband Homer leave with his friends. Homer and his pals go bar hopping, play some poker, and end up, bottles in hand, with other Indians on a hilltop. During the night, the men pick up women, there are fights, there's camaraderie, and Homer reflects on life in the city versus life on the reservation. For anyone who does not know the film analysis of Thom Andersen, "The Exiles" may
not be familiar. It is a piece of film history and is important for a number of
reasons. It was featured in Thom Andersen's film called "Los Angeles Plays Itself."
"Los Angeles Plays Itself" is now available on DVD and for fileshare users it is on my file list as this index recently uploaded.
"The Exiles" takes place in the early 60's and shows how displaced Native Americans
live in the city of Los Angeles. It has both documentary and dramatic elements and has
been preserved by Milestone Productions through the work of the UCLA Film and
Television archive. The word displaced above should be explained:
The work of Pamela J Peters and Exiled NDnz tells us this:
"Mackenzie was the only filmmaker at that time that documented ‘realistic’ imagery of
American Indians going through the BIA, U.S. government Relocation Program."

The Milestone release has two discs. Please encourage your libraries to acquire the
