Over 3 hours of music (3 CDs) enclosed in a beautiful 130+ page hard cover book. Previously unrelease material from the famed Bourbon St., Toronto 1975 gigs which were originally released on Horizon as Jim Hall Live!. Arguably one of the greatest Jazz guitar trio recordings ever made. Live! Vol. 2-4 features previously unreleased recordings from trio performances at Bourbon Street in Toronto, Canada. The recordings provide an additional 3 hours of music from the original Live! (Horizon) release. Featuring Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums Live! Vol 2-4 was released as part of my latest Fan-Funded project.

The CD case is a 150 page hardcover book with 3 audio CDs (and a fourth disc containing 24bit/48k audio files) as well as access to video and print interviews with and commentary by fellow musicians and friends such as Pat Metheny, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Scott Colley, and others.

I've waited nearly 40 years for the music in this set. At the time these performances were recorded, Jim Hall had a reputation as a "composer" in the genre of modern jazz, his solos created with a logic and sensibility of a carefully crafted opus. In the years since, the Live! recording (volume 1 on Horizon/Verve-look up that recording and read those reviews) has proven to be a benchmark of creative performance. I'd always heard that the album was one fraction of a week's engagement. I'd watched for it constantly and now it's out.
For a week of songs: standards, Ellington, originals and no repeats, we have a veritable reference book of creative genius. The intimate setting of a small jazz club, appreciative audience, musicians with a deep musical connection and telepathic sense all conspire to form a suite of music that will reward at first listening and deepen with every revisit. I was amazed to find that each track is on par or exceeds anything on the Live! recording. For me, these recordings are infectious; I listen again and again. The recording quality is also notable in capturing the feel, fragile acoustics and intimate energy of a great live performance.
This box set is a limited edition, and I assume that at the conclusion of this production run, these recordings will once again join the realm of the unobtainable. I didn't hesitate to purchase it, I feel I possess a part of history, documentation ( there is also what is essentially an inclusive small book with information on the background, reactions and revelations of the performances within) and in the end, a whole lot of sublime music.
