In 1848, a New York bank wants to put a railroad across Mexico, so it buys up small banks around Santa Rita, Durango, and evicts farmers on the proposed rail line who owe money. The bank's henchman is the murderous Jackson. He runs afoul of two women, María, the tough but uneducated daughter of a farmer, and Sara, the European-educated daughter of the owner of one of these banks. 1880. La dura legge del Far West non risparmia neanche il Messico. Sara (Salma Hayek), figlia di un ricco banchiere e Maria (Penelope Cruz), figlia di contadini, avevano pochissime possibilità di incontrasi e dividere la stessa sorte. Almeno fino al giorno in cui Tyler Jackson (Dwight Yoakam), rappresentante della New York Bank and Trust, le unisce nella cattiva sorte, distruggendo le loro famiglie per impadronirsi illegalmente delle terre messicane e permettere il prolungamento della ferrovia americana.
