My notes
What pushed me along on this recode was a recent note on a performance called "Antigone in
Ferguson, Missouri." The connection there is the desecration of one who is dead without
proper respect for the deceased. I don't know if it was preserved.
In Antigone (1961) The fact that Greek classics get made at all is a rarity. I host a number of
them on my profile. Antigone I originally file- shared from another source for a couple years on a
different index. Here I've used the DVD available to me to fix some errors and add some subtitles.
I put the Albanian subtitle in there since only recently learning that after a lifetime of acting
as Greek, Irene Papas admitted late in life she is actually Albanian.
Also of note, The film proper does not include some info in one of the third party
subtitles: The translations by Judith Malina (see my file share from The Living Theatre called
Signals Through The Flames) and some other details. The Greek Royal Army Horsemen were used in
this as the titling tells us at the beginning. Also 500 actors from stage and film are supporting
players. The so-called peplum films of musclemen or sword and sandal genre frequently
has these very large casts before the age of CGI.
The DVD copy looks to be duplicated from a film print. Too few of these are given a complete
restoration.
And I noticed that my over-the-torrents copy previously shared was not the same
FPS that MediaInfo shows for the DVD. The new rip with Handbrake fixes that error.
Subtitles for classics are important. I had a hard time finding subtitles with matching
time stamps from third parties and I do not know much about re-timing subtitles. But with
one SRT sub from Opensubtitles.com I was able to easily get a few more with the Subtitle Translator
service described in the text file included called "How to get more subtitles." A quick viewing
shows that the subs I gathered line up with the film. Perhaps others can add the black box effect
or drop them out of the image area to make reading the subs over the burned in English easier to
read. These things can be done with players, perhaps even coded Subtitle Edit.
