When Jake LaMotta steps into a boxing ring and obliterates his opponent, he's a prizefighter. But when he treats his family and friends the same way, he's a ticking time bomb, ready to go off at any moment. Though LaMotta wants his family's love, something always seems to come between them. Jake La Motta è cresciuto nell'ambiente degli italoamericani del Bronx ed è sempre stato orgoglioso della sua forza.
È quasi normale per lui dedicarsi alla boxe, aiutato dal fratello Joey nelle vesti di allenatore e manager.
Anche lui, però, per conquistare il titolo mondiale, deve sottostare alle leggi delle organizzazioni mafiose che ne controllano il sottobosco.
Capolavoro di Scorsese e del cinema americano moderno, "Raging Bull" è un affresco sull'America (e sull'Italia), un omaggio al cinema (e alla sua morte), superbamente fotografato da Michael Chapman.
Due soli Oscar, ma inappuntabili:
al montaggio di Thelma Schoonmaker, e a De Niro (che ingrassò di trenta chili per le scene della vecchiaia del pugile).
