GEORGE ORWELL, the pen name of Eric Blair (1903-1950), was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic who is commonly ranked as one of the most influential English writers of the 20th century.  His work is marked by lucid prose and biting social criticism.  As he explained in the essay "Why I Write" (1946), "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it."

Orwell’s first novel, BURMESE DAYS (1934), established the pattern of his subsequent fiction in its portrayal of a sensitive, conscientious, and emotionally isolated individual who is at odds with an oppressive or dishonest social environment.  He is best known for the allegorical novella ANIMAL FARM (1945) and the dystopian novel NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR (1949).  While fiction accounts for a small fraction of his total output, these two novels are his best-selling works, having sold almost fifty million copies by 2007 — more than any other pair of books by a twentieth-century author.

His substantial body of non-fiction — including book reviews, essays, literary criticism, editorials, and investigative journalism — was written for a variety of periodicals related to literary and cultural criticism.  His full-length studies, including THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER (1937), documenting his experience of working-class life in the north of England, and HOMAGE TO CATALONIA (1938), an account of his experiences soldiering for the Republican faction in the Spanish Civil War (his "watershed political experience"), are as critically respected as his numerous essays on politics and literature, language and culture.  Both combined mordant reporting with a tone of generous anger that was to characterize Orwell’s subsequent writing.  The exceptional COLLECTED NON-FICTION (2016) encompasses twelve annotated volumes and ranges across the whole of Orwell's writing life, compiling reviews, broadcasts, notebooks, wartime diaries, and correspondence with luminaries such as Arthur Koestler, Anthony Powell and Evelyn Waugh.

Orwell's writing pierced intellectual hypocrisy wherever he found it.  Koestler said that Orwell's "uncompromising intellectual honesty made him appear almost inhuman at times."  According to one historian, he "was the saint of common decency who would in earlier days have been either canonized — or burnt at the stake."  In both his fiction and non-fiction, he was one of literature's most passionate advocates to oppose "all the smelly little orthodoxies which are now contending for our souls."  His insights into linguistics, literature and politics continue to be influential decades after his death.
