Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. Nell'aprile 2009, mentre naviga nelle acque dell'oceano Indiano a 400 miglia da Mogadiscio, la nave cargo danese Maersk Alabama, capitanata dall'americano Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), è assaltata da un gruppo armato di pirati somali.
Phillips, sposato con Andrea (Catherine Keener) e padre di due figli, non esita a offrirsi come ostaggio pur di mettere al salvo i membri del suo equipaggio e la nave.
