Harriet, il film diretto da Kasi Lemmons, racconta la vera storia dell'attivista afroamericana Harriet Tubman (Cynthia Erivo) che nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento ha combattuto contro la schiavitù, salvando più di 300 uomini.
Inzialmente schiava con il nome di Araminta “Minty” Ross, la donna fugge dalla piantagione nel sud degli Stati Uniti raggingendo il nord america dove la schiavitù non era ammessa. Qui cambia nome e diventa Harriet Tubman, per confermare il suo stato di donna libera. Successivamente decide di tornare indietro e salvare la vita dei suoi fratelli schiavi. Grazie al suo coraggio e determinazione Harriet diventerà una vera e propria eroina americana. Infatti attraverso l'utilizzo dell'Underground Railroad, un sistema di case, passaggi e strade segrete, creato dagli attivisti abolizionisti, Harriet riuscirà a portare in salvo centinaia di schiavi.
