My notes
A lot going on in this play for a modern audience. The author Allan Bennett is, I beilieve the same Allan Bennett who stared in the review Beyond The Fringe decades ago.
Mark Gattis was in the recent Coriolanus. And Nadia Albina has been in several of these productions I keep going: RSC Merchant Of Venice and a recent Othello which I've
not duplicated. That will have to wait.
The play whose accuracy I don't doubt points to the dreadful practice of medicine before the scientific age. More than that it shows the abuse of a mental patient who happens to be the king. "I am the doctor" the king is told during his torture which is deemed a cure. There are lighter moments to be sure and Allan Bennett has written a fine play on many levels.
The subtitle additions are made available from a browser add in for which I am grateful.
