In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt, a government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. Nell'anno 2154 la popolazione umana è divisa in due grandi categorie:
da un lato le persone molto ricche, che vivono in una stazione spaziale incontaminata chiamata Elysium, e dall'altro il resto della gente, costretta a vivere in un pianeta Terra sovrappopolato e in rovina.
Delacourt (Jodie Foster), una rigida funzionaria governativa, non si ferma davanti a nulla nel far rispettare le severe leggi anti-immigrazione atte a preservare il lussuoso stile di vita degli abitanti di Elysium.
I terrestri, però, tentano di emigrare con ogni mezzo possibile e lo sfortunato Max (Matt Damon), messo alle strette, si impegna a portare a termine una difficile missione, che in caso di successo cambierebbe molte vite e porterebbe la parità tra i due mondi.
