The second release from Famous Flames is all about the power of melody and the marvels of the juxtaposition of saxophones and guitars. The Backbeat Of Rock and Roll brings together the great songs that didn t need a sing-along chorus or a life-defining one liner in their lyrics. This wordless journey includes the infectious grooves and finger-popping hits that relied on twangy guitars, syncopated rhythms, all-consuming organs and honking brass stabs. Sure, there s the odd mention of Tequila and the odd instructional dance move but in this 92 track compilation, it s the back beat that takes centre stage as the perfect follow up to Famous Flames' acclaimed First Rock and Roll Record CD. Throughout the 1950s, the concept of the instrumental track was wrestled away from the cloying strings of MOR orchestras and into the hands of screwdriver-wielding guitarists, sleazy saxophonists, primal garage bands and dance craze creators. The teenage generation demanded music with everything and non-vocal versions of the hits sat next to specially created rabble-rousing gems that transcended genres and styles. This was music where words were just not enough. This collection, compiled by Dave Henderson from Mojo Magazine, contains 94 tracks from the 1950s, the glory days of instrumental music, the very backbone of rock 'n' roll, the spine of RnB and primitive pop music. An almost wordless journey that traverses dirty rock 'n' roll, syncopated be-suited dance moves, the glory of twangy guitars, RnB shuffles, sleazy jazz shakedowns and truly inspirational music. Littered with chart topping hits from rock 'n' roll legends including Duane Eddy, Johnny And The Hurricanes, Link Wray, The Ventures and The Champs, the album features a procession of radio-friendly favourites including 'Raunchy', 'Wild Weekend', 'Bongo Rock', 'Madison Time', 'The Happy Organ' and 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo'. Backbeat.. is chock full of inspirational moments, like the Keith Richards-approved 'The Fickle Chicken', Jimmy Page heroes Santo & Johnny, the embryo of rock 'n' roll, 'Rumble', and Cramps faves like The Duals along with the birth of surf instrumentals courtesy of Dick Dale and The Belairs. Including buried treasure like the northern soul gem 'Gonzo' by James Brooker, The Dyna-Sores' flipside 'Jungle Walk' and The Frantics' "sensuous" 'The Whip', every song is a must from a time when the bongo was king, the saxophone honked remorselessly and string bending guitars were nothing short of essential.
