In rock & roll's early days, Texas was one of the few Southern states where the new music truly flourished. Rockabilly singers and like-minded combos sprang up in the wake of Elvis and the other Sun rockabillies who played in the state, and venues that normally booked strictly country acts embraced the new sound as well. One of these cities was Dallas with its Big D Jamboree, which gave both visiting rockers and local bands a chance to shine. These 13 tracks from the vaults of the Dallas, Texas-based Starday label document that scene with a handful of singles from that label, along with several unreleased tracks. Label owner Pappy Daily seems to have tampered very little with the output on his label, as most Starday (and his Dixie custom press label) singles exhibit an unvarnished and unbridled passion in their performances. Link Davis' "Sixteen Chicks" and Rudy "Tutti" Grayzell's "Ducktail" kicked up enough noise regionally to get covered by RCA Victor rockabilly Joe Clay as both sides of his first single for that label. Sonny Fisher's contribution here is Texas rockabilly at its most elemental, full of swagger, menace and knife-edge guitar solos on tracks like "Rockin' and Rollin'" and "Pink & Black," an ode to the genre's official colors. Link Davis checks in again with the stomping "Don't Big Shot Me," a slice of Cajun rockabilly that's exceptionally fine. Many of the local artists Daily recorded or leased masters from were also disc jockeys, with Pappy releasing sides on them to take advantage of their local popularity and the airplay that they could provide for his other releases. The most notable of these was Bill Mack, who recorded for Imperial, Starday and other labels, and his "Kitty Kat" is a classic example of the hillbilly boogie sound. Other proto-rockabilly sides are aboard with "Rock Candy Rock" by Fred Crawford and "Get Off My Toe" by Cliff Blakely being especially noteworthy. Big-ticket rockabilly classics come in the form of Benny Joy's "Spin the Bottle" and Groovey Joe Poovey's ode to Jerry Lee Lewis, "Ten Long Fingers (On 88 Keys)," awith Poovey also represented by two unissued tracks, "Careful Baby" and the doo wop-styled "Luella." Although this compilation is somewhat hampered by its short running time and lack of detailed notes, what is here is nonetheless grade-A rock & roll from its ground-floor inception.
