avatarisn't popular to state however maybe if the government ever did "stuff" other than line the pockets of those already beyond gluttonous with wealth, furthering enriching soullessly insatiable corporations, and actually instead allocated adequate funding to address hunger and poverty then the drastically ill-equipped "faith" community wouldn't be required to address this with a patchwork of insufficient efforts. no one in politics really cares about the poor though. politics is all a representation of class and the poor are literally the worthless class. at least bernie made it fashionable to bring up occasionally. much of organized religion is unfortunately its own narcissistic project, using poverty as one excuse to slip in some theological group-think brainwashing. instead of addressing a secular issue in a secular manner religion pollutes the whole concept on multiple levels of guilt, misrepresentation, and then it has the megalomania to imagine that it can prevent hunger and poverty and by taking that stance gives the government a radically perverse incentive and the publice relations to not do so. the dubya administration were masters at this, as are all conservatives and neoliberals trying to compete with them alike. it is unfortunate because many of those that need to "believe" and that are of "faith", which it seems is the vast number of people, probably have good intentions, however we all know metaphorically where that paved road leads to. ditto for the political prayer line, the praying for trump canard is literally unbelievable. meacham finishing with the golden line of bullshit that "america is the fullest manifestation of the enlightenment and of reason and of fact, and lets follow reason and fact, not ideology", has he been in a coma for the last three and a half years? or did he wake up from a teleportation machine from an alternate dimension? it is really quite rich the romanticism of historians. a quarter of a millennia from now, if humans even survive on this planet, they will look back at us and see how barbaric and unthinking we were and continue to be, just as any honest reflection of humanity a few hundred years ago is viewed by any contemporary impartial and "enlightened" observer.
