During World War Two, Flying Officer Rupert Pengelly spends six months in the British colony of Rhodesia. And what of her eccentric grandfather, a prospector looking for emeralds? Will he ever find them?

But nothing can prepare him for what is next. Another war is looming. The irrepressible tide of black nationalism is sweeping through Africa and life is about to change forever.
