Dark Tranquillity are a Swedish melodeath band from Gothenburg (Or in Swedish: Göteborg), and regarded as one of the pioneers of the Gothenburg Metal Scene.

They have kept a mostly consistent line-up. Rhythm guitarist Mikael Stanne switched to vocals after Anders Fridén's departure. When his replacement Fredrik Johansson left in 1998, bassist Martin Henriksson took up the guitar duties and Michael Nicklasson came in on bass. They also added an "electronics" man Martin Brändström at this time. Michael Nicklasson left the band on 23rd of August 2008.

In 2016, they released their latest album, Atoma. Atoma is the band's first studio album with new bassist Anders Iwers, who replaced founding member Martin Henriksson (also the rhythm guitarist), after Henriksson left the band in early 2016. The song uses more symphonic elements and more soft vocals.
