This 3CD set includes Beiderbecke, Artie Shaw, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Basie, Hot Lips Page, Jimmie Noone & Johnny Dodds amongst others. Most of these are given a handful of pieces, except for Noone & Dodds, who get ten songs each, and are the most influential artists in the set. Deservedly so, in my opinion, as their clarinet work is a joy to hear, and Noone in particular was seriously under-recorded. Both performances dance with joy amongst the 60 tracks here, which bring you about 3 hrs 15 mins of music recorded from 1923-45.
Sound quality is variable, and understandable given the vintage of many recordings, although it's sometimes the later pieces which sound most muffled/recessed, and there is also some variability in sound levels too. Overall though, the sheer excitement and commitment in the performances win through, in a set which is overwhelmingly foot-stompingly good. The insert booklet does provide a sketchy background to the period, and full track listings and dates, but frustratingly no running times.
I agree with those frustrated by the lack of track info; I have also found this a regular irritant even with some recent releases, and really feel Amazon could make more effort to inform customers. Having said that, this set is good enough to take a gamble with, as you can see from the various reviews. If you enjoy New Orleans/Dixie, and especially if you love the sound of warm clarinet, bursting with joy (an endangered species in today's jazz world), this is a collection for you. As for me, I'm going back to listen to some more...
