Mario, modesto impiegato, avviandosi una sera svogliatamente verso casa, scorge una donna che, appoggiata alla ringhiera di un ponticello su un canale, piange singhiozzando. Egli le si avvicina e avendo cercato di confortarla, offrendogli il proprio aiuto, rimane prima sconcertato, poi affascinato dal comportamento della giovane donna, ora cupa e angosciata, ora allegra e quasi infantile. Egli desidera rivederla ed ottiene da lei un appuntamento per la sera dopo.
Mario, a modest clerk, starting off one evening listlessly towards home, sees a woman who, leaning against the railing of a small bridge over a canal, cries sobbing. He approaches her and, having tried to comfort her, offering his help, is first shocked, then fascinated by the behavior of the young woman, now dark and anguished, now cheerful and almost childish. He wants to see her again and gets an appointment for her the next evening.
