| Spooky Torrent Warns EZTV Users About “Huge Security Risk” BY ERNESTO (torrent freak) EZTV, one of the prime destinations for TV-minded torrent users, is distributing a rather disturbing video on its site. By plastering a list of dozens of IP-addresses in the latest episode of Lucifer, the encoder warns EZTV users that the site is a huge security risk. For more than a decade EZTV has been a widely recognized brand among many BitTorrent users and known as one of the main TV-distribution groups. While the original EZTV shut down following a hostile takeover, the people who took over are still serving torrents to millions of people every month. Generally speaking, EZTV takes releases from outside encoders which they then distribute with their own nametag. It’s been like this for years and has never caused any real problems. Last week, however, a disturbing release was added to the site, sending a message to EZTV users. What appeared to be a regular release of Lucifer S03E19, turned into something darker. Ten minutes into the episode, a red warning appears, telling viewers that EZTV.ag is a huge security risk. Huge Security Risk Throughout the rest of the episode, a few dozen IP-addresses appear plastered across the screen. Needless to say, this makes the program rather unwatchable. According to the earlier message, these IP-addresses are “used on EZTV.ag.” This seems to suggest that the website has a leak somewhere unless it refers to IP-addresses of downloaders, which are public anyway. IP-addresses It is hard to grasp what’s really going on here and there is no direct evidence that the site has been breached in any way. Not directly at least. At the end of the episode, a final message appears, adding to the intrigue. The message comes from the encoder DeXoX and offers up a complete IP-address database, email addresses of registered EZTV users, and more. DeXoX Again, we have not been able to verify the validity of these claims but it’s certainly not good PR for EZTV. The spooky torrent has been downloaded by thousands of people already and is still listed on the site several days after first appearing. We are not familiar with DeXoX, but it appears that the person behind the handle is not a fan of EZTV.ag, to say the least. It remains unclear how the torrent was added to the site. It could be that the EZTV site has indeed been breached in some way, or DeXoX has access to the site where EZTV sources its material. In any event, the release page or the site itself contains no warnings, only the video itself. Update: This torrent is not the only problematic release. There are several others. For example, “Krypton.S01E03.All.Subtitles.HDTV.x264[eztv],” released a few days ago, turns out to be a porn video with another alarming message. Full story at torrentfreak | |

| Displays Warning On Predecessor’s Shutdown Anniversary BY ANDY ON MAY 18, 2018 ExtraTorrent.ag, one of the Internet's most popular torrent sites, appears to have some serious domain issues. The site sprang up in the wake of the original ExtraTorrent's demise exactly a year ago, hoping to scoop up some of its traffic. But yesterday the domain, which was previously home to a top 10 torrent site, began pointing to a generic landing page and is now returning security warnings. Exactly one year ago, millions of users in the BitTorrent community went into mourning with the shock depature of one of its major players. ExtraTorrent was founded in back in November 2006, at a time when classic platforms such as TorrentSpy and Mininova were dominating the torrent site landscape. But with dedication and determination, the site amassed millions of daily visitors, outperforming every other torrent site apart from the mighty Pirate Bay. Then, on May 17, 2017, everything came crashing down. “ExtraTorrent has shut down permanently,” a note in the site read. “ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline. We permanently erase all data. Stay away from fake ExtraTorrent websites and clones. Thx to all ET supporters and torrent community. ET was a place to be….” While ExtraTorrent staff couldn’t be more clear in advising people to stay away from clones, few people listened to their warnings. Within hours, new sites appeared claiming to be official replacements for the much-loved torrent site and people flocked to them in their millions. One of those was ExtraTorrent.ag, a torrent site connected to the operators of EZTV.ag, which appeared as a replacement in the wake of the official EZTV’s demise. Graphically very similar to the original ExtraTorrent, the .ag ‘replacement’ had none of its namesake’s community or unique content. But that didn’t dent its popularity. ExtraTorrent.ag At the start of this week, ExtraTorrent.ag was one of the most popular torrent sites on the Internet. With an Alexa rank of around 2,200, it would’ve clinched ninth position in our Top 10 Torrent Sites report earlier this year. However, after registering the site’s domain a year ago, something seems to have gone wrong. Yesterday, on the anniversary of ExtraTorrent’s shutdown and exactly a year after the ExtraTorrent.ag domain was registered, ExtraTorrent.ag disappeared only to be replaced by a generic landing page, as shown below. ExtraTorrent.ag landing page This morning, however, there appear to be additional complications. Accessing with Firefox produces the page above but attempting to do so with Chrome produces an ominous security warning. Chrome warning Indeed, those protected by MalwareBytes won’t be able to access the page at all, since ExtraTorrent.ag redirects to the domain FindBetterResults.com, which the anti-malware app flags as malicious. The change was reported to TF by the operator of domain unblocking site Unblocked.lol, which offers torrent site proxies as well as access to live TV and sports. “I noticed when I started receiving emails saying ExtraTorrent was redirecting to some parked domain. When I jumped on the PC and checked myself it was just redirecting to a blank page,” he informs us. “First I thought they’d blocked our IP address so I used some different ones. But I soon discovered the domain was in fact parked.” So what has happened to this previously-functioning domain? Whois records show that ExtraTorrent.ag was created on May 17, 2017 and appears to have been registered for a year. Yesterday, on May 17, 2018, the domain was updated to list what could potentially be a new owner, with an expiry date of May 17, 2019. Once domains have expired, they usually enter an ‘Auto-Renew Grace Period’ for up to 45 days. This is followed by a 30-day ‘Redemption Grace Period’. At the end of this second period, domains cannot be renewed and are released for third-parties to register. That doesn’t appear to have been the case here. So, to find out more about the sudden changes we reached out to the email address listed in the WHOIS report but received no response. Should we hear more we’ll update this report but in the meantime the Internet has lost one of its largest torrent sites and gained a rather pointless landing page with potential security risks. | VPN provider Private Internet Access, which has a strict no-logging policy, has proven once again that it is unable to link online activities with a user's identity. The conclusion, which was revealed as part of a hacking trial in San Jose federal court, is the second time that the provider's claims have been successfully tested in public. The 34-year-old was accused of hacking into several local media websites owned by Embarcadero Media Group including the Palo Alto Weekly and the Almanac. He was charged with intentional damage to a computer, attempted damage, and misdemeanor computer intrusion. According to the indictment, Colby illegally accessed Embarcadero Media email accounts in July 2015. Then, in September 2015, several of the company’s websites were hacked to display the Guy Fawkes image associated with Anonymous. The message “Unbalanced Journalism for profit at the cost of human right. Brought to you by the Almanac” was also left behind. Facing more than two decades in prison and fines totaling several hundred thousand dollars, Colby pleaded not guilty and was freed on bail. On May 29, 2018, Colby’s trial began in federal court in San Jose. Palo Alto Online has been reporting (1,2) on the case, which has thrown up something of interest to VPN users. According to evidence provided by FBI Special Agent Anthony Frazier, between July and September 2015, IP addresses operated by VPN provider Private Internet Access (PIA) were used to access email accounts and systems belonging to Embarcadero Media. | Demonoid’s Torrents and Owner Are Missing in Action BY ERNESTO ON AUGUST 11, 2018 Over the past week, Demonoid's users have been unable to download anything from the torrent tracker. Instead of the usual stream of torrents, they see a "no torrents found" notice. While this appears to be a relatively small technical issue there is reason for concern, as the site's founder is missing in action . As one of the oldest torrent communities online, the Demonoid tracker has gone though many ups and downs. The site has suffered long stretches of downtime, faced legal threats, dealt with internal struggles, but survived nonetheless. Earlier this year the tracker processed its ten millionth user registration. Things were relatively calm and the original founder, Deimos, was back in charge, working on several improvements. “I want to to see the community we had back. Don’t know if it’s possible but that’s my aim,” Deimos told us last year when the site started to recover from a long stint of downtime. The community indeed started to grow again, but roughly a week ago Demonoid ran into what appears to be a technical issue. Suddenly, the torrents started to ‘disappear’ from the site. Instead of seeing the usual flood of fresh content, users saw a “no torrents found” message. Strangely enough, the top torrents list is working normally. Also, torrents may occasionally appear and disappear after several refreshes, as shown here, but there’s clearly something wrong. While this could be a relatively simple database issue, there’s a more serious concern. It’s not just the torrents that are missing in action, Deimos is also unreachable, even for members of the site’s staff. “Deimos is nowhere to be found for the last few days and I can’t reach him,” Demonoid staffer Phaze1G says, noting that it’s a major problem. Phaze1G says he last spoke to Deimos over a week ago and hasn’t been able to get a hold of him since. Demonoid’s founder was dealing with some personal issues and a business trip, but the lack of communication is unusual. TorrentFreak also reached out to Deimos a few days ago through our usual channel, but we haven’t heard back since. While there’s reason for concern, without more information, there’s no reason to panic. Phaze1G informs us that all torrents are still showing up in the test version of the new design, so they’re on the servers somewhere. This means that there’s likely a small issue that needs to be fixed. However, Deimos is the only person with server-side access, so people must wait for his return. Meanwhile, Phaze1G cautions users not to spread any wild rumors. “The site is not hacked, stolen, compromised, FBI / CIA conspiracy, and so on,” he notes. full story found here Credits Story found and taken from torrent freak. | |

| Top 10 Torrent Site iDope Goes Down With Domain Issues BY ANDY ON AUGUST 15, 2018 One of the Internet's most popular torrent sites has disappeared offline. iDope took the number 10 spot in our annual list of most-visited torrent sites but has been missing in action for a number of days. The site’s operator informs TF that domain issues are behind the downtime and normal service should be resumed in the coming days. In the summer of 2016, shockwaves rippled through the BitTorrent scene when KickassTorrents (KAT), the world’s most popular torrent site at the time, was forcefully shut down. The action coordinated by the US government saw alleged KAT founder Artem Vaulin taken into custody. Meanwhile, millions of former users scrambled to find alternatives elsewhere on the Internet. Unsurprisingly, many dispersed to existing torrent giants such as The Pirate Bay and RARBG but it didn’t take long for new blood to enter the ecosystem. Soon after KAT’s demise, a new indexer called ‘iDope’ made its debut, largely as a tribute to the dismantled torrent behemoth. “This project was developed the next day after we knew KAT was taken down, it’s very very new, and we are a very small team, so you won’t find anything about it on the Internet, especially when we never promoted it decently,” one of the site’s operators said back in 2016. “We only intended to make simple products that everyone can enjoy, we don’t make bucks out of it, and thus we promise no annoying pop-up ads.” In the months and years that followed, iDope gained a significant following and in January 2018, the relatively new site broke into TorrentFreak’s annual round-up of the world’s most-visited torrent sites. With similar traffic to the equally popular Zooqle, iDope bagged itself a joint tenth position in the list. During the past week, however, problems have hit the site. Without any warning, iDope – which has operated very smoothly from the iDope.se domain since its launch – went offline. The site’s Twitter and Facebook accounts have been dormant for some time and the recent downtime didn’t result in any updates. Unfortunately, that vacuum has left people to speculate on what has caused the outage, from technical issues to problems with the authorities. TorrentFreak contacted the last known email address associated with the iDope team expecting that to be dead too. Overnight, however, we received a response, one that leaves hope for a smooth return for the popular torrent index. “There are some problems with our domain idope.se, We are communicating with the domain provider. We believe it can be restored within a few days,” TF was told. While iDope was down, other domains that appeared to be clones or perhaps mirrors of iDope remained up, albeit with indexes a few days out of date. In the first instance it was unclear whether those domains were operated by the site itself but we’ve now received information which suggests that at least two are official. “Everyone can visit our website using idope.cc or idope.co,” iDope’s operator says. At first view, the current downtime faced by iDope seems a little ironic, given that the site’s operators previously claimed that the site would never go down. “[T]he server provider we chose will protect our servers even from hurricanes, earthquakes, nuclear bomb. Honestly [I don’t know] how they are capable of that, sounds pretty badass,” its operator previously said. However, as the above shows, iDope’s server is actually standing strong and it’s only its .se domain that’s having a wobble. full story Credits : torrent freak | |

| TorrentFreak is Blocked as a Pirate Site and Hacking Resource BY ERNESTO ON AUGUST 25, 2018 Court-ordered pirate site blockades are pretty common nowadays. While not everyone sees these as the ideal solution for the problem at hand, they follow the letter of the law. More problematic are the private blocking efforts by various Wifi providers, which we are frequently the target of. Apparently, TorrentFreak is a pirate site too. From Australia to Sweden, all around the world courts have ordered ISPs to block access to pirate sites. This usually happens after a careful review by a judge, who weighs the arguments from copyright holders and Internet providers before a final decision is made. That’s a fair process. However, these court-ordered blockades are only the tip of the iceberg. Much more common are private blocking efforts where local WiFi providers use broad blocklists to shield people from visiting dangerous sites, including the one you’re on now. This problem is not new but the lack of improvement has become increasingly frustrating. Earlier this month a reader informed us that he was unable to read our news while staying at a Premier Inn in Croydon. Apparently, the hotel’s Virgin WiFi network banned us for our “Criminal Skills/Hacking, News.” Hackers This is no temporary or local mistake. In recent months we’ve received several reports of similar Virgin WiFi blockades, including from our colleagues at ISPreview. They ran into the same TorrentFreak blockade while conducting a study of WiFi performance in UK hotels. And it’s not just Virgin that’s doing the blocking here. This week another reader alerted us that he was unable to access TorrentFreak on a GovWifi connection. This network is used by many government institutions and managed by the Government Digital Service. Apparently, they, or their blocklist provider, has classified our news site in the “Piracy and Copyright infringement” category, and accessing it would be a violation of the acceptable use policy. No access These two recent examples are related to the UK, but these broad blocklists are used elsewhere too. We’ve seen our site blocked in US libraries and airports, Norwegian trains, and even in a Canadian McDonalds. We have reached out to both Virgin and the Government Digital Service for a comment on the most recent examples. At the time of publication, we have yet to hear back. Perhaps our email is blocked too? We hope they can eventually shed some light on their motivations. In the meantime, let’s hope our readers have learned enough from our “hacking skills” to know how to bypass these blocks…. Credits Torrent Freak. full story found here | |

| OpenPGP Keyservers Now Store ‘Irremovable’ Torrent Magnet Links BY ERNESTO ON SEPTEMBER 7, 2018 BitTorrent has proven to be an ideal tool for pirates. The protocol's decentralized nature makes it impossible to interfere with transfers between users. Torrent sites and indexes are the only weak link in the chain, but there are novel solutions to that 'problem' as well, it appears. BitTorrent is often praised for its decentralized nature. The file-transfers take place between users and there’s no central service required. That’s also one of the main reasons why pirates embraced it. There is a weak spot though. In order to download something, you need a torrent or magnet link. These are available through torrent sites which, as history has shown, can disappear overnight. While it’s unlikely that all torrent sites will be eradicated at once, we recently spotted a rather novel approach to this ‘problem.’ A few weeks ago OpenPGP keys with magnet links were added to SKS keyservers. These keyservers are computers which store and index OpenPGP keys over the Internet. This helps users who rely on encrypted email, for example. The servers generally share the keys amongst each other in a pool and uploaded keys generally can’t be removed. The permanent storage of keys generally isn’t an issue. However, when the system is used as a stealth resource to store magnet links to pirated content, this resilience is put in a different light. This is exactly what happened. A few weeks ago a series of rather odd, but valid, PGP keys were uploaded to SKS keyservers. These keys were not meant to encrypt email though, but as a safe storage for torrent magnet links. As a result, popular keyservers, including the ones hosted by research university MIT and Surfnet, have transformed into pirate sites. The magnet links, most of which point to pirated content, were added in the UID field. In examples we’ve seen, sometimes there were a hundred magnet links added to a single key entry. And with the search functionality of the keyservers, these are easy to find. Magnet links.. While there are over a thousand magnet links on these keyservers now, there are a lot of duplicate entries. That makes it more of a gimmick than a usable tool for pirates, but still. While keyservers are not really an alternative to pirate sites yet, these magnet links have not gone unnoticed. We received the first tip weeks ago and others spotted it too. The irremovable nature of these links is particularly intriguing. MIT, for example, clearly states in its FAQ that it is impossible to remove keys once they’re up. TorrentFreak spoke about the issue with Kristian Fiskerstrand, who operates the sks-keyservers website. He notes that removing keys is not possible due to the nature of these servers. “The keyserver network is intended as an add-by-anyone key store, and structurally these are valid OpenPGP keyblocks,” Fiskerstrand says. Only the owner of a private key can remove an entry. Keyservers are designed to keep their data online and share it with other servers. Similar to the blockchain, nothing is removed. Fiskerstrand confirms that if copyright holders want these keys removed, they’re out of luck. “[E}ven if the copyright holders were having issues with it they should focus on removing the underlying data not any pointer that is far off the original data,” Fiskerstrand notes. That, however, brings us back to the beginning of this article. Since BitTorrent transfers are decentralized there is no single source to go after. Copyright holders will have to go after each and every pirating torrent user individually… Credit: torrent freak. Full story | |

| BY ERNESTO ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2018 In a plenary vote, the European Parliament backed a slightly amended version of the original Article 13 proposal, one that would still result in an indirect upload filter requirement for many Internet services. Pirate Party MEP Julia Reda regrets the outcome of the votes. However, the opposition's fight is not over yet. Two years ago the European Commission announced its plans to modernize EU copyright law. While the plans initially received little mainstream attention, in recent months there has been an outpouring of opinions, warnings, and advice from both supporters and opponents. The issue that grabbed most headlines is the “upload filter” language specified in Article 13 of the proposal. While the word “filter” has been removed following earlier critique, the Article would require service providers that are not properly licensed to remove infringing works. In addition, they have to ensure that these works are not reuploaded anywhere on their servers, which is generally achieved by filtering. The Legal Affairs Committee of the Parliament (JURI) adopted the proposals in June, a major setback for opponents. However, a month later the European Parliament said no to the Copyright Directive mandate. This meant that the controversial copyright reform proposal would be opened for amendments and a new vote. Over the past several weeks, more than 100 amendments were submitted, several of which proposed an alternative to the original Article 13. These changes were presented in a plenary session this afternoon, where Members of European Parliament (MEPs) submitted their votes. In a plenary vote, 438 MEPs voted to support the Article 13 proposal put forward by the Rapporteur Axel Voss’ EPP group. 226 MEPs voted against and there were 39 abstentions. This is a revised version of the original proposal, but one that would still pave the way for upload filters. “The European Parliament endorses #uploadfilters for all but the smallest sites and apps. Anything you want to publish will need to first be approved by these filters, perfectly legal content like parodies & memes will be caught in the crosshairs,” Reda notes. Article 13 Small, under current European law, means a service which employs fewer than 50 persons, with an annual turnover or annual balance sheet total that does not exceed 10 million euro. “Today’s decision is a severe blow to the free and open internet. By endorsing new legal and technical limits on what we can post and share online, the European Parliament is putting corporate profits over freedom of speech and abandoning long-standing principles that made the internet what it is today,” Reda adds in a separate statement. Many rightsholder groups are pleased with the outcome. They believe that this will bridge the so-called “value gap,” making it easier to negotiate licensing deals with user-generated platforms. “In spite of a very aggressive campaign against the proposed Copyright Directive, the Members of the European Parliament voted in favour of authors and the recognition that they need to be remunerated by whoever exploits their works.” says Cécile Despringre, Executive Director of the Society of Audiovisual Authors. The EU Parliament also voted on proposed amendments of Article 11, after which opponents were met with disappointment. The MEPs voted in favor of a proposal by the EPP group, which keeps much of the original link tax language intact. So what’s next? Today’s vote is an important next step but it’s not the end of the lawmaking process. The Copyright Directive and the agreed amendments will now enter the stage of trilogue negotiations with the EU Council and Commission. The result of these private discussions will determine the final text the European Parliament will have to vote on early next year. In most cases, the result of the trilogue negotiations is confirmed, but when that’s not the case the entire process of changes, negotiations, and a vote, starts over. If the Copyright Directive is eventually adopted, individual Member States will have to implement it into local law, which is another hurdle that has to be passed. Credit: Torrent Freak | |

| Cloudflare Ordered to Expose YTS, Showbox, and Popcorn Time Site ‘Operators’ BY ERNESTO ON SEPTEMBER 19, 2018 C: 35BREAKING A recent DMCA subpoena has ordered Cloudflare to expose the people linked to various popular pirate sites and tools. The request, quietly submitted out of public sight, comes from a group of movie studios attempting to hold site owners responsible for piracy damages. As one of the leading CDN and DDoS protection services, Cloudflare is used by millions of websites across the globe, some of which are notorious pirate sites. The company has taken a lot of heat from copyright holders over the past few years, who want it to expose the operators of these platforms. However, instead of taking a proactive stance, Cloudflare maintains its position as a neutral service provider. If copyright holders want it to take action, they have to follow the legal process. This usually means obtaining a subpoena, ordering the company to share the personal details of its customers. This is exactly what a group of movies companies, including Bodyguard Productions, Cobbler Nevada, Criminal Productions, Dallas Buyers Club, and Venice PI, recently did through a federal court in Hawaii. These companies are involved in a series of piracy lawsuits. Best known are the so-called “copyright trolling” cases against alleged BitTorrent pirates, but more recently they began expanding their horizons to the people behind piracy services, such as the popular streaming app Showbox. The subpoena was issued in the latter case after being filed last May. The documents were not posted publicly but TorrentFreak managed to obtain a copy, which shows that the movie companies want details of the operators behind Showboxbuzz.com, Showbox.software, Rawapk.com, Popcorn-time.to, Popcorntime.sh, YTS.ag, and YTS.gg. From the DMCA subpoena Some additional digging revealed that no motion to quash was filed by Cloudflare, so it is likely that the requested information will be handed over. The subpoena itself doesn’t reveal anything about the intentions of the movie companies, however. The targeted sites are not listed in the original lawsuit, but it’s possible the owners are suspected of being linked to the defendants. In any case, it is clear that the movie outfits see the information as potentially valuable evidence in their legal battle. The question remains, of course, whether the information Cloudflare has on record will be of use. Many operators of pirate sites and services do their best to shield the true operators from being exposed. | |

| Torrents are very popular these days, most of the person wants to watch the latest released movie on the first day of its launch, lots of torrent websites are out there, but a few are accessible and providing excellent user experience, no external links is one of theme.
