What are your favourite Western movies or series and why do you think they are so good, Neo Westerns included.

I asked Kentajalli if he would mind having a go at 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' and i think he made a brilliant job of cleaning it up, it was very rough originally, i popped the torrent up if anyone wants to watch :_B)

Oh yeah, classic movie Sundays with my dad :_love:_love:_love when we were kids...

True Grit (1969; the proper one with John Wayne)
Chisum (1970)
The Sons of Katie Elder (1965)
The Magnificent Seven (1960)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
El Dorado (1966)

... and (IMHO :_:-)) Kevin Costner's been a bit of a :_eggplant in everything he's ever done except Yellowstone, and even there Beth, Rip, and Teeter are more fun to watch.

A few Western 'titbits'

The Searchers, generally acclaimed by critics as the best ever Western but if you ask anybody to name their own top 10 'The Searchers' is rarely in it.

A Fistful of Dollars and The Magnificent Seven, both of these movies were actually taken from Japanese movies directed by Akira Kurosawa, Fistful was developed from 'Yojimbo' and The Magnificent Seven was created/pinched from 'The Seven Samurai'.

John Wayne/ Clint Eastwood, These boys had a falling out mainly due to American studios and European Studios allowing different levels of violence. Hollywood had it's own rules/guidelines..no shooting of horses, any actor shot is to be edited so you do not see it all in the one take and of course the Europeans were not making their movies like that hence when asked what he thought of Clint Eastwood, John Wayne replied 'that kid shoots em in the back'. The Sergio Leone movies became extremely popular and the levels of violence remain to this day.

Kevin Costner, I think he makes a very good Western but he ruins it by being in them himself, he comes across as being involved in absolutely everything which is a shame, i like Horizon Chapter 1 btw.

Sergio Leone, He made his movies in an 'Opera' style and if you have that in mind when you watch his Westerns i think they are better to watch, i love them whichever way i approach them.
Sergio was born in Rome and grew up during WW 2 so Italy was overrun with American GI's in his childhood, they all had far more money than the Italians so he thought they were all rich beyond words. The reason money and greed are the focus of his Westerns and also Once Upon A Time In America.
Time and the use of instruments that tell it to us are prevalent in his movies also and nobody has really given a full explanation as he wanted an air of mystique.

You chose a movie that would always be in my top 5 'little Ange', i like For a Few Dollars more far more than 'Fistful of Dollars'.
I think they hit the right button with having two bounty hunters one old and one young, it just works for me their relationship and some of the dialogue.
Clint 'was the question impertinent?'
Lee 'the question wasn't but the answer could be'
That's just so classy.

Spaghetti Westerns :
United Artists were promoting the three Westerns as 'the dollar trilogy' with 'the man with no name', where actually Clint had a name in all 3 movies.
A Fistful of Dollars : Joe
For A Few Dollars More : Manco
The Good The Bad and The Ugly : Blondie
Manco translates to 'one armed' or 'maimed hand' in several languages especially Spanish & Italian and if you watch the Movie again Clint does everything with his left hand, lights his cigarillo, throws over his poncho, deals and shuffles cards, throws punches in brawls, his right hand is only his shooting hand or death hand, as soon as his right hand is revealed death occurs haha :-)
The Good The Bad & The Ugly
Clint is 'the good' but he seems far from good in my opinion, quite nasty, selfish and brutal actually, three times he tries to kill Tuco in some warped manner, it is funny but hardly good i think :_B)

The wife and I watched Tombstone a few nights ago and a thoroughly enjoyable watch it was too, Val Kilmer played his part extremely well.

Once Upon A Time In The West 1968/9 [Sergio Leone]

What a movie this is, Sergio was already in the process of preparing to make Once Upon A Time In America when the studio demanded another Western so reluctantly Sergio agreed but set the movie up so it would definitely be his last Western.
This is the reason the movie is full of references to classic Hollywood movies directed by John Ford and Howard Hawks (and there are many), the other idea was to cast a Hollywood good guy as the movie villain and Henry Fonda was approached and duly accepted.
As i mentioned in a previous post Hollywood frowned upon graphic violence in Westerns at that time, so Sergio set about getting Frank (Henry Fonda) in his first appearance on the screen to shoot an innocent boy dead, it had the desired effect in cinemas when audiences in America gasped 'oh my god it's Henry Fonda' apparently.
The opening scene was the longest in movies at the time and maybe still is, but it is classic Ennio Morricone and Sergio the opening, lots of ambient sounds, close facial portraits and very little talking, worth watching even if you do not watch the whole movie imho.
One of the crew shouted 'will someone get an oil can and fix that windmill' to which Sergio snapped ' anybody touches that windmill with oil and you are fired'!
Brilliant movie this one and certainly one of my favourites :_B) :_pirate

Tombstone; Unforgiven get watched every few years.

The Young Guns films are light and fun...when I want the vibe but not the trauma.

There Will be Blood (if it counts as neo) - a great. Daniel is scarily reminiscent of my father, especially towards the end...

As for the rest - I've seen and enjoyed many (not all) of the names mentioned in the thread so far, though I haven't collected older films and haven't held on to too many recent ones...if I was going to have a western day it would begin with: High Planes Drifter, Pale Rider, El Mariachi, Desperado...these stick out as films I really enjoyed at the time but haven't seen since...
