| So, for years I've used various VPN's, mostly payed-for market leaders, and I'm happy with that. But recently I've been thinking about the server location. Historically I've tried to choose server locations outside of the "Five Eyes" group on the basis that information could be shared freely between them. But -- if the VPN company isn't keeping IP address logs -- is the performance hit I get, by not using a nearer server location, really worth taking? If anybody has real-world experience or knowledge, I'd be extremely interested to hear it folks. | |

| Thanks Balerion I have read your post, and it's fine as far as it goes. The most relevant comment to my question is... Where it is based on and does it has good privacy laws? If it is based in USA, I probably will think twice. If it is based in Sweden or Switzerland high chance I will consider. But I'm wondering more about server location than ownership. Fine, I get my VPN might be owned by people in Sweden. But, what if the server location I go through is in New York. If I live in Boston, that might give me a nice, fast connection, but how wise is using the US-based server? Maybe I should use a server in Cuba? But that is (trust me ) considerably slower. Is the performance hit worth it if -- for example -- my Swedish VPN company doesn't keep logs anyway? That's more what I'm getting at; what do you think? | |

| also Iceland and estonia. But Ild probably only use these in Europe to keep the ping rate as low as possible... | |

| Location based wise depend on few point: - It is generally not to use the vpn servers where you are currently based in, eg: Living in USA, use VPN servers outside USA. This will make the regulators to have extra steps in obtaining it and/or tracing it in general. - When selecting a server location, consider whether that country infrastructure is it good? Take Cuba, surely the infrastructure will not match up against USA. It's a developing country. - https://www.submarinecablemap.com/, I use this map as a guide to see where are the major transit point located in simple, that's where all the data travels. Using the map, I can say Cuba is only a immediate point. Let's say take Switzerland, landlocked country but good point is they are strong on privacy. Of course, speed wise for Switzerland might not be as fast as compared to locations which are major transit point - take UK and Ireland, take note it is under 5 eyes! - I currently based in a country in south-east asia and I selected Sydney server as it is the nearest advance developed country and also a major data transit point. In my view, there is no perfect location where you can have the best privacy, speed and infrastructure. There will be trade off. If I read correctly, for you is location hence may I suggest that you choose somwhere across the pond? I don't trust south americas location, eg: BVI and Cayman island - both belong to UK ultimately even they are good on privacy but i still won't use it. | For me, the most important thing for me is: - no logs policy - anonymous payment methods Different people will have different requirement and needs... That's why my guide I also invite others to share their view and constructive discussion. Last edited by Balerion on 2024-06-30 20:29:49 | |

| It doesn't matter where the server is located. It all boils down to the policy of the vpn provider. If they keep logs... It's a no go. If they don't keep logs then it doesn't matter if you pick a server nearby. The connection speed depends on how busy the server is... Not the location.. | |
