|  As potential F1 teams await word on their applications to join the grid, Christian Horner says accepting a new team and diluting the prize pot is “like turkeys voting for Christmas”. Back in January, Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, officially opened the application process for a new team to join the grid by 2025 at the earliest. The guidelines for the applicants included proving they were “seeking to participate at a competitive level” with the FIA also looking at a number of aspects including funding, technical capabilities and personnel and experience. While a lot has been said about Andretti Cadillac wanting a place on the grid, earlier this week the Asian based LKY SUNZ team told PlanetF1.com they’d sent in their letter of interest and are now waiting to hear back from the FIA. But while the exiting 10 teams don’t have a say in the process, both Mercedes and Red Bull – along with others – are concerned that including an 11th team would dilute not only the product but also the prize pot. “First of all, we have no say in this,” insisted Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff. “If we’re being asked… Our opinion is being asked. But we’re not part of the process of choosing a team or not. “The opinion that we have expressed is that it’s very difficult in Formula 1 to perform. It has taken us many years to be where we are. “We’ve gone through really difficult times where Formula 1 wasn’t the blockbuster it is today, and therefore whoever enters the sport, I think it would be beneficial for all of us if they can really bring something new to the show.” Laying out his criteria, he continued: “If it can help us to increase our audiences or if there is lots of marketing dollars that are being invested, similar to what we have done over the years. Red Bull and Mercedes, sitting here, I mean, hundreds of millions. “And if that were the case, I think we need to be all open-minded and say how can we contribute to making that happen? But again, we’re not part of the governance. “So I would very much hope that we find someone, if we decided to go for another team, that somebody can really leverage what we have today and make it even greater.” That’s a sentiment echoed by Red Bull team boss Horner, who has previously raised questions about who is going to pay for an 11th team. Today’s regulations state that every team involved in the sport will receive a share of the prize pot whereas in yesteryear it was only the top 10. Having asked back in January “why should we dilute our element of the prize fund”, the Red Bull team boss says that’s a question he still wants answered. “I think the issues remain the same as 12 months ago, both fiscally – what is the incentive for an existing team or franchise to accept an 11th entrant – and then ultimately, who pays?” he said. “I mean, if it dilutes the income of the 10, it’s like turkeys voting for Christmas. Why would they do that? You know, are Liberty prepared to pay and fund an 11th team? Are the FIA prepared to reduce their fees to help accommodate it? So, you know, there are all the financial aspects. “But I think beyond that with the way that the sport has now developed, if you look at the pit lane, for example, here or somewhere like Monaco, Zandvoort, or some of the circuits that we’re now racing at, where would we be able to accommodate an 11th team? “I think that in itself, just operationally, where do we put the motorhomes? Where do we put the support? Where do the trucks go? I just think it would be an incredibly difficult thing to be accommodated with the way that the sport has currently evolved as well.” F1 chief Stefano Domenicali spoke about new team’s entry fees last month and hinted at that increasing. He told the media that the “so-called anti-dilution payment was done at $200 million, just a couple of years ago. Because at that time no one would have expected that the value of this business would rise up so much. “Today the situation is totally different, for sure. |  While George Russell has warned against “knee-jerk” reactions to overtaking seemingly becoming harder again in F1, he says the drivers have an “ultimate dream” which they are talking to series bosses about. A rather dull Azerbaijan Grand Prix was arguably the catalyst for complaints that the main aim of the new-era F1 cars, introduced from 2022 and relying on ground effect aerodynamics, is starting to come undone. Into the second season of the regulations teams are tapping into huge chunks of extra performance, with lap times approaching two seconds faster in some cases compared like-for-like with 2022. This is apparently contributing to the ‘dirty air’ effect becoming more prevalent once more. The latest round in Miami did feature more overtaking action, though Mercedes racer Russell said that the drivers had come together before the race in Baku to discuss concerns that growing overtaking difficulty was becoming a trend. Russell did make it clear that no drastic steps should be taken, but pointed out that the fears which the drivers had in Baku ultimately came true, with the decision to shorten the DRS zone by 100 meters down the main straight there drawing some criticism. “I think for a couple of races now it’s been challenging to overtake,” Russell claimed. “For sure, Baku wasn’t the most exciting race in the world, but there are a number of factors for that. “But yeah, there should never be a knee-jerk reaction, but we were all talking about this issue prior to the race in Baku, and then the race obviously went on to be as dull as we all expected.” This has pushed the drivers to voice their concerns to the Formula 1 bosses, with Russell saying the “ultimate dream” is to have a situation like in their karting days where they can really go to battle in race conditions. One of the main points of concern, which Russell said was brought up by Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, is the Pirelli tyres with clear one-stop strategies having been the order of the day in Baku and Miami. “I think at the end of day, we all want the best races, the most exciting races,” Russell stated, “and there’s probably a few easier ways to achieve this in the short term, like Esteban [Ocon] said about the tyre degradation. “It’s been easy one-stops in the last couple of races. And when everybody’s pushing flat out, there are less exciting races. “Obviously the DRS has gone in the wrong direction. So there’s a couple of small things, but you know, for sure, we’re going to speak with the FIA and F1 about this. “We want to be able to race, we want to be able to fight, as we all did in go-karts, where there was no aerodynamics. So that’s the ultimate dream. “I think the sport took a really good turn for the better when these new cars were introduced, but we need to take it to the next step now.” While a Formula 1 where aerodynamics are eliminated from the equation will likely never come to be, Russell would double down on his calls for the Pirelli tyre compounds to be addressed, requesting a more “consistent” tyre that at a certain point falls off the cliff and necessitates more pit stops. Pirelli are introducing a stronger construction from the British GP onwards, but their compounds will remain the same, with this instead a response to the escalating downforce levels that the teams are finding. “We’re pushing Pirelli to deliver a good tyre, a consistent tyre and when it is difficult, you know, the drivers, myself included, we don’t like it,” Russell continued. “But in an ideal world, you have a very strong tyre, which at a certain point falls off the cliff and means you have to do a few more pit stops and gives it some different opportunities in the races.” After five rounds of the F1 2023 campaign, Russell finds himself P6 in the Drivers’ standings with 40 points, while his Mercedes team are P3 in the Constructors’. | |

|   When was the track built? Imola – or the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari as it’s been known since 1988 – had its foundation stone laid in March 1950. It was ready for testing by October 1952, while racing began at the circuit in 1953. When was its first Grand Prix? Imola first hosted a non-championship F1 race in 1963, but it would take some politicking with Monza in 1980 before the track was awarded the honour of hosting the Italian Grand Prix for the first time that year. From 1981, the two tracks worked together in perfect harmony, with Imola taking on its famous ‘San Marino’ title, and going on to host a total of 27 Grands Prix up until 2006. It returned as venue for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in 2020. What’s the circuit like? A thrill ride. After testing his AlphaTauri AT01 at the track in the build-up to the 2020 season, Pierre Gasly called the experience one of the best he’d ever had in a Formula 1 car, while his then-team mate Daniil Kvyat remarked that “an F1 car through corners like Acque Minerali – the entrance is so fast, it’s so cool. It really gives you a lot of adrenaline.” The anti-clockwise circuit is certainly fast, with an old-school feel as the drivers put it on the line in iconic corners like the aforementioned Acque Minerali and Piratella. Why go? Like neighbouring Mugello, Imola is nestled in a fantastic part of the world, with the Tuscan hills to the south, the Adriatic beaches to the east and the gastronomic delights of cities like Bologna, Parma and Modena to the west – as well as the F1 mecca that is Ferrari’s HQ in nearby Maranello. There’s also no getting around the fact that a visit to Imola is an opportunity for F1 fans to pay their respects to Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, who lost their lives at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Where is the best place to watch? The stand on the outside of Acque Minerali is a great spot to see an F1 machine being pushed to its absolute limits, as the drivers struggle to get the cars down to speed for the tight right-hander before blasting back up the hill to the Variante Alta chicane. | |

|  F1 might struggle to get to Monaco - Codello The Formula 1 world might struggle to get from Imola to Monaco in time for next weekend's grand prix. That is the warning of the director of operations of the F1 support series Formula 2, Marco Codello, following the decision to cancel this weekend's rounds at Imola due to local flooding. Earlier, Alpine engineer Karel Loos told the Sporza news agency that while the Formula 1 paddock at Imola is not under water, the F2 and F3 support paddock is knee-deep in parts. "At the moment, our trucks cannot leave," he said. "Our people on site are also stuck. "Now have to wait until we can get back to the track to pack everything up and ship it to Monaco for the next race." Codello, F2's director of operations, said that with just days separating the scheduled Imola and Monaco rounds, and more heavy rain scheduled in the Emilia-Romagna region, logistics may now be a major problem. "Formula 2 and Formula 3 need two days to prepare, Formula 1 needs a little longer," he said. "I hope the situation will improve and we will be able to leave Imola on Thursday, but there is no exact plan yet. Perhaps we will stay here and go straight to Monaco, where we should be on Monday evening. "I imagine that Bologna airport will not only be flooded with water, but also filled with people who want to go home. |   When was the track built? The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was built as part of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics development programme. The foundation stone was laid in 1989, while the first car race was a round of the 1991 Spanish Touring Car Championship. When was its first Grand Prix? Two weeks after the touring cars raced at Barcelona, it was Formula 1’s turn. The track enjoyed a sensational debut, with Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna’s famous eyeball-to-eyeball drag race down the straight, before Mansell took the lead and drove on to victory. What’s the circuit like? The drivers love the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which is just as well, as they have traditionally spent huge amounts of time pounding around it during winter testing. The track is a good mix of high- and low-speed corners, with the challenging Turn 3 right-hander a great chance to evaluate the balance of the car your team’s designers have given you to fight with for the season. Why go? You don’t need us to tell you that Barcelona is one of the world’s great cities, even if we just sort of did. Food, culture, beaches – it’s all there, making a Spanish Grand Prix holiday a properly attractive proposition. Where is the best place to watch? You’ve got plenty of choice, with almost the whole track overlooked by grandstands or general admission areas. On the outside of Turn 1, Grandstand A will let you see the best overtaking spot on the track, while the general admission area around Turn 3 will provide the awe-inspiring sight of Formula 1 cars being pushed to the limit of their downforce capabilities. | |

| Verstappen's combustion engine, Turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K will be replaced. It is the third engine for Verstappen, so there is no grid penalty. The Exhaust System of the Dutchman has also been replaced, but since this is the fourth, there will be no grid penalty for these either. All these parts have been replaced by Pérez as well. Also for the Mexican, it is his third engine and fourth Exhaust System, which means no grid penalty will be distributed. |  Silverstone When was the track built? Little did those laying the perimeter road to the RAF Silverstone airfield in 1942 know that they were setting down what would become one of the world’s greatest race tracks. But, well, they were! The Silverstone circuit was first used for a proper motor race in 1947 – although sadly, a local sheep lost its life during the proceedings… When was its first Grand Prix? Silverstone was the first Grand Prix, hosting the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship round on May 13 1950. Old campaigner Giuseppe Farina, who’d take that year’s title, won the race in his Alfa Romeo 158. What’s the circuit like? At the 2018 British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton compared a flat-out lap around Silverstone to flying a fighter jet, which should tell you all you need to know about the Northamptonshire circuit. Despite numerous layout changes over the years, Silverstone has always maintained its essential character as one of the fastest tracks on the F1 calendar, while historic corners like Maggotts, Becketts and Abbey provide some of the biggest challenges for racing drivers anywhere in the world. Why go? It’s hard to stop the goose bumps from prickling as you walk around one of the great cathedrals of motorsport, while in terms of atmosphere, the British fans are always reliably raucous – this is the country that invented football (that’s soccer, mind), after all. Where is the best place to watch? The Becketts grandstand has to rank highly on the ultimate list of places to watch an F1 car in action – believe us, your eyes will be on stalks when you see how quickly the drivers zip through Maggotts and Becketts. Further along the track, the Stowe grandstands will place you at one of the best overtaking spots, while watching the drivers chuck their cars into that corner on their own is nearly as good. | |

| AUSTIN, Texas -- Max Verstappen has reiterated his criticism of Formula One's sprint race format, saying it detracts from the excitement of a race weekend. Verstappen has been a vocal opponent of sprint races since they were first introduced in 2021 and has not warmed to them despite changes to the format to improve the show. This weekend's U.S. Grand Prix is being run to a sprint format, meaning qualifying for the grand prix took place on Friday, a second qualifying -- known as the shootout -- ran on Saturday, which then set the grid for the 19-lap sprint race later the same day. The full 56-lap grand prix will get underway on Sunday as normal. The sprint race pays out a maximum of eight points for winning with further points given in descending order down to a single point for eighth place. "If you want my honest opinion about sprint weekends, I don't really get excited by it," he said after taking pole in the shootout and winning the sprint at the Circuit of the Americas. "I just feel like once you complete [Friday] qualifying you are a bit lost. I feel like we only need one qualifying in the weekend where you really put everything on the line and it feels great. "This morning as well, I put it on P1 and was like 'pfft it's a Saturday, there's not many points anyway for the race'. And besides that like now we've done this race everyone more or less knows what's going to happen tomorrow between all the cars in terms of pace, so it takes away a bit the excitement of it. "If we had not done today, and we only have the qualifying that we had yesterday, you don't really know what's going to happen in the race, it's exciting to turn on the TV because you don't know, and also we don't know ... but now we know." | How do you beat a team like Red Bull? That's the question facing Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Aston Martin this season, and the one Formula One desperately hopes will be answered in order to inject some excitement back into its championship after two dominant championship victories for Max Verstappen. Red Bull won 21 of 22 races in 2023, and in Verstappen's hands the all-conquering RB19 rarely looked under threat. Based on the results of the past two seasons, the current set of technical regulations, which were introduced in 2022 and will run until the end of 2025, appear to belong to Red Bull, just as the previous sets dating to 2014 belonged to Mercedes and the early 2000s belonged to Ferrari. There is hope for Red Bull's rivals, though. Although the reigning champions extended their advantage from 2022 to 2023, the rest of the field began to bunch up behind them, and there's a belief that the stable regulations from 2023 to 2024 could allow the leading edge of that group to envelop Red Bull. It might sound like wishful thinking given that Red Bull shifted its focus from 2023 to 2024 relatively early in its campaign last season in order to focus on another big step this year, but some rival engineers believe the law of diminishing returns could apply to Red Bull's progress. If they're right, development of this year's RB20 could plateau while those behind are still making big gains. | |

| Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has been cleared of misconduct following an investigation into a team employee's accusations of inappropriate behaviour. The team's parent company, Red Bull GmbH, initiated the independent probe in early February after Horner was accused of controlling and inappropriate behaviour by a member of Red Bull's F1 team. In a statement issued Wednesday, Red Bull said: "The independent investigation into the allegations made against Mr Horner is complete, and Red Bull can confirm that the grievance has been dismissed. The complainant has a right of appeal. "Red Bull is confident that the investigation has been fair, rigorous and impartial. The investigation report is confidential and contains the private information of the parties and third parties who assisted in the investigation, and therefore we will not be commenting further out of respect for all concerned. "Red Bull will continue striving to meet the highest workplace standards." Horner, 50, strongly denied the allegations when news of the investigation broke on Feb. 5. He has continued in his role throughout the process, and will remain as Red Bull team principal. Pressure was mounting on Red Bull to resolve the situation before the opening round of the 2024 Formula One season in Bahrain this weekend, with F1 itself calling for a resolution at the "earliest opportunity." Over the weekend, Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, wrote to Red Bull's parent company to state the American car giant is "increasingly frustrated" by the length of the investigation and the lack of transparency. Ford is set to partner Red Bull's F1 engine division from 2026 onward. Speaking ahead of the announcement, Red Bull's three-time world champion Max Verstappen said he trusted the process when asked whether he fully supported Horner. "Well I'm trusting the process, that's what's happening right now, that's the thing that I mentioned with it," he said. "When you talk about performance, it's of course very important that everyone sticks together." Horner has been in charge of the team since its inception in 2005. Under his guidance, Red Bull has won six constructors' championships and seven drivers' championships, three of which have come consecutively with Max Verstappen since 2021. | Hamilton doesn't deserve a seat in ANY teeam IMHO. His childish, unsportsman-like behaviour, needlessly throwing two teams into abject chaos announcing his intentions a full 12 MONTHS(!) in advance. It's just poor form, immature and idiotic and completely without merit. How can anyone in Mercedes help Hamilton to achieve his best this year? But, more importantly, what happens if the Mercedes cars DO come good this year and they start winning? What if Hamilton wins the championship? Is he still going to move? But wait... what if Sainz wins the championship (or greatly out-paces Leclerc in the championship)? Are Ferrari still going to cut him? How about the hardcore Tifosi who absolutely DESPISE Hamilton? Ferrari just took a giant doo-doo on their most loyal fans (my wife is a Ferrari fan--she's jumping ship when Hamilton joins. Pretty sure that won't have Enzo turning in his grave though). But a lot of Ferrari fans also feel the same way. Hamilton is the arch-enemy of Ferrari as far as the Tifosi is concerned. I think that Hamilton's prima donna personality has ruined this season for himself and a lot of other people and a couple of teams this year. If it was just Hamilton effected, it would be laughable. | |
