After listening to everyone and their brother bang on about how great it is I eventually watched the first series, really enjoyed it.

Yes i think they did make season 2 & 3 at the same time. Season 3 is basically the 2nd half of the season 2 storyline so maybe wait untill june/july and see the whole thing

Is it a remake of the 60's show with the robot and the Weasley Dr bloke?

If it is, I used to really enjoy that on a Sunday afternoon.  A cheese and pickle toasty and C4 for POB, Lost in Space & Little House on the Prairie, might have been The Waltons, I was young and they were repeats.
