| Hi, in this guide we will see how to create secure passwords from your PC (GNU/Linux, Windows & macOS), before starting I want to let you know that there are several websites that allow you to create secure passwords, but in this guide we will use software that goes downloaded and installed on our PC. After we have connected to the https://keepassxc.org/ and have downloaded and installed the software we can finally start creating our password. Then in the top menu we click on "Tools> Password Generator", as shown in the figure: Once in the "Password Generator" page, we can see that we have the possibility to choose the length and the characters that must contain our password, but in addition to this we can also use the "Passphrase" function which instead of using letters and numbers uses words. The latter method may seem ineffective but if we want a simple and secure password to remember it is the right choice. There are some points that you should always keep in mind when creating passwords, for example never use the following: 1. Do not enter dates of birth and names of our relatives or our animals; 2. Same goes for movie names, street names, cities, locations, brands, etc .... Never insert sentences taken from songs, books and quotes; 3. Passwords like "12345678", "abcdefgh", "password", "0000", "00000000", because they are too trivial; 4. As in the previous example, they must not only have numbers or letters, but must contain both with the addition of some special characters (# @ ç? $ ...). Note: The real strength of a password is not so much the length, but the randomness of the characters (both lowercase and uppercase) and the numbers used. For example, the password "loginpasswordforfacebook" is less secure than "P@$ wd_FbK". However as regards the length of the passwords, I personally recommend not to go below 10 characters ("Password" method) and 4 words ("Passphrase" method), obviously it depends on what you will use the password for, if it is to protect the access to a site as an administrator or in the use of credit cards (eCommerce websites), I personally would use the "Password" method with at least 30 characters (obviously always generated randomly by KeyPassXP). I recommend the "Passphrase" method to protect access to a site that does not contain too sensitive data, such as a forum website or, thanks to the ease with which they are remembered, they are perfect as a password to access a PC from home or from an Internet Café. Note: Even if the "Passphrase" feature uses words it still manages to give us good passwords, which is difficult for us humans because our brain is constantly "bombarded" with information that is able to put together words that are somehow unrelated between them it is probably an impossible feat! Note: Even if you remember the password you are using by heart, it is always advisable to keep a safety copy on a sheet of paper as well as on your PC (in a "Password Manager" such as KeyPassXC). | If to do go up the path of using a password manager please be sure to backup the database created by the manager, as loss of the manager by ie: system failure, could leave you locked out of everywhere. Please also test your backup arrangements :) I don't use a password manager, but I do use a password generator, a good one can be found here https://passwordsgenerator.net/ At least you can store your passwords where you want and encrypt in a zip/rar file with a password if you wish. Okay a bit old school, but it works | |
