I spent quite a few years on KAT. Didn't do much for a long time, but near the unexpected end of the original sites life I became active, reporting torrents for malware. Wanted to help, and this was the best way I could do it. Eventually got noticed and they put Mod training wheels on me, that ultimately carried me to Super Mod. The following 2(ish I think) years were quite a ride. Now I was able to actively handle these torrents and keep the site and it's users relatively safer. Even got an appreciation for what really happened behind the curtains, and how much these people cared about KAT and why it was a shining crown of P2P torrent sites. Even if I didn't always agree, I knew they still had the best intentions for everyone.

Also learned a mod had at some point noted my account as a sleeper, and expected me to wake up and dump malware. Which I still find pretty funny, cause I would've done the same thing.

Even beyond the torrents where most of my personal time was spent hunting malware, there were entire communities nestled in those forums. Cliques were formed, fights, teamwork, the whole deal, and it ran deep. An experience I still haven't seen since and what I think made KAT special. It was just as much a social hangout as it was a torrent site.


Everyone hoped to see it come back, and it did for a while. I'm glad there was a good attempt to keep the train running, and it's sad to see it never quite made it in the end, even if I jumped ship well before its demise. The confusion and regrouping in disqus as everyone gathered together and rebuild right after KAT was taken down was fueled entirely by a love of a place many users called home. To see that it's seemingly truly gone this time around marks the quiet end of a former giant, and it's a disheartening thing.

TGx picking up the reigns for those still looking to remain in touch is great to see, and I hope in time it continues to grow.
